The folks at Azores Airlines (also known as SATA) are learning from Iceland Air and offering a free Azores stopover on routes from the U.S. and Canada to certain destinations in Europe and Africa. Which Flights from the US and Canada Qualify for the Azores Stopover?
Azores airlines flies direct from Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Rhode Island, and Oakland. Do those cities seem random? It’s because the flights are near the largest population of Azoreans. There are a lot of Azoreans south of Boston and towards Rhode Island because of the Azorean connection to the whaling industry. There’s also a large Azorean population near Fresno, California, hence the Oakland flights.
We’ve summarized direct flight patterns for each departure city but there are more options if you’re not flying direct. We’ve also just included prices for flights from the U.S. and Canada to the Azores and we include prices from the Azores to mainland Europe and Africa further below. The total prices from the U.S. and Canada to mainland Europe and Africa are usually a little less than the two prices added together. And the flight routes and prices are obviously subject to change, especially as more tourists take advantage of the Azores stopover!
The Azores stopover can be used on one-way or roundtrip flights, but it can only be used once. So either going outbound or inbound on a roundtrip flight. If you’re coming from a city in the U.S. or Canada that’s not listed below, it’s usually best to book another airline separately to one of the destinations listed below.
Boston Azores Airlines Flights. There are usually flights from Boston 5 days a week from November to March (4 days the flights go direct to São Miguel and 1 day to Terceira). Flights in the winter start from about $225 each way in economy. Azores Airlines offers direct flights 7 days a week in the summer (6 days a week the flights go direct to São Miguel and 1 day a week to Terceira). Flights start from about $350 each way in the summer but the flights will jump as you get closer to the summer and sometimes even sell out. You’ll save if you don’t travel around holidays or fly during the week. It’s about a 4 hour 45 minute hour flight from Boston to the Azores and about 5 hours and 50 minutes back to Boston.
Toronto Azores Airlines Flights. There are usually flights from Toronto 3-5 days a week from November to March. Flights in the winter start from about $250 each way in economy. You’ll save if you don’t travel around holidays or fly during the week. Azores Airlines offers direct flights 6 days a week from Toronto in the summer and flights start from about $500 each way in economy. Flights will jump as you get closer and sometimes even sell out. It’s about a 5.5 hour flight from Toronto to the Azores and about 6.5 hours back.
Montreal Azores Airlines Flights. There is only one direct flight in the summer from Montreal to the Azores but all but one day the rest of the week there are flights that go through Toronto. Prices start at about $275 one way but jump in the summer. It’s about a 5 hour and 25 minute flight from Montreal to the Azores and about 5 hours and 50 minutes back.
Rhode Island Azores Airlines Flights. There are only flights from Providence in the summer, and they are one day a week to Ponta Delgada. It’s about a 4 hour 50 minute hour flight from Rhode Island to the Azores and about 5 hours and 25 minutes back to Rhode Island. The flights start at $275 each way.
Oakland Azores Airlines Flights. There are only flights from Oakland in the summer, and they are one day a week to Terceira. It’s about a 9 hour and 30 minute flight from Oakland to the Azores and about 11 hours and 15 minutes hours back. The flights start at $750 each way.
Which Destinations in Europe Include the Azores Stopover?
Azores Airlines flies to limited destinations but the free Azores stopover can be as part of a longer flight to Europe and Africa. We’ve included a summary of each destination below.
Lisbon – Flights to Lisbon run multiple times a day, 7 days a week all year round. It’s about a 2 hour 10 minute flight from the Azores to Lisbon and 2 hours and 25 minutes the other way. The flights start at about $75 but get more expensive in the summer.
Porto – Flights to Porto run 7 days a week all year round, sometimes multiple times a day. It’s about a 2 hour 10 minute flight from the Azores to Porto and 2 hours and 25 minutes the other way. The flights start at about $75 but get more expensive in the summer.
London – Flights to London’s Gatwick airport only run one day a week and only from around May to October. They start about $250 each way.
Frankfurt – Flights to Frankfurt run 1 day a week in the winter and 3 days the rest of the year. It’s about a 4 hour 20 minute flight from the Azores to Frankfurt and 4 hours and 30 minutes the other way. The flights start at about $200 but get more expensive in the summer.
Madeira – Flights to Madeira run 2 days a week all year round. It’s about a 2 hour flight each way and the flights start at about $70 each way.
Canary Islands – Flights to Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands run 2 days a week in the winter and 7 days a week in the summer. It’s about a 3 hour flight each way and the flights start at about $100 each way.
Cape Verde – Flights to Praia International Airport in Cape Verde run 1 day a week in the winter and 2 days a week in most of the Spring, Summer and Fall. It’s about a 3 hour 35 minute flight from the Azores to Cape Verde and 3 hours and 50 minutes the other way. The flights start at about $150.
Which Islands can you Visit on Your Azores Stopover?
The stopover is to São Miguel (airport code PDL) and Terceira (airport code TER), the two largest islands in the Azores. Most flights from the U.S. and Canada go direct to São Miguel but Boston has one flight a week direct to Terceira and the flights from Oakland go to Terceira. If you want to visit one of the other 7 islands in the Azores Archipelago during your 7 days, you can always book a separate flight or ferry that’s not part of your stopover ticket.
