It’s summer and you’re heading to Spain but are unsure which Balearic island to visit: Ibiza or Mallorca. Both islands have turquoise waters, secret coves and stunning beaches. Both have incredible food: Iberico ham, Spanish cheeses, Padron peppers, suckling pig, heaps of paella and glorious wine. Both have gorgeous nature and a warm Mediterranean climate. To help you make a decision, here are our thoughts on how the islands are different, the best things about each island and whether Ibiza or Mallorca is the right island for you.

THE CONTENDERS: IBIZA OR MALLORCA?

Ibiza is a 220+ square mile island off the eastern coast of Spain known for some of the best nightlife in the world. Ibiza’s Old Town, Dalt Vila, is a UNESCO world heritage site with cobblestone streets and cozy buildings. The coastline is surrounded by sand and pebble beaches while the countryside is filled with dry, scrubby vegetation, farmers and hippies.

Mallorca lies 120 miles northeast of Ibiza and covers a huge territory, 1,405 square miles. Mallorca has a lush, hilly interior and winding roads, perfect for biking and trekking. Palma, the main city, is bustling with activity and full of great spots to eat, drink and explore.

So, which island should you visit: Ibiza or Mallorca?

THE TIEBREAKER: IBIZA V MALLORCA

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat who lives in London and who has made many trips to Ibiza (including Formentera) and Mallorca. I’ve stayed in different parts of each island, explored by rental car, speedboat and dinghy, feasted on as much good food as possible and gone out for fun nights. I’ve also visited to Menorca, the last Balearic island of the group, and travelled widely across the rest of Spain. I’ll help you figure out whether to visit Ibiza or Mallorca below.

Mountains in Mallorca

THE PROS AND CONS OF IBIZA AND MALLORCA

If you’re limited on time or logistics and need to choose between visiting Ibiza or Mallorca, consider these points:

If you want to party in the greatest clubs, then head to Ibiza where you can hit up DC-10, Pacha and Ushuaia clubs (our faves) for the best electronic dance music. Check the schedule before you go as different clubs host different theme parties each night (or even day) of the week. For example, Amnesia hosts a foam party every Saturday where club goers are doused with frothy foam sprayed from full-on foam cannons. The iconic DJ David Guetta plays at Pacha every Thursday and Es Paradis hosts the weekly neon paint party where everyone gets splattered with glow-in-the-dark neon paint. You can find more information (like the party calendar, party descriptions) here.

If you want to relax in hip beach clubs during the day, head to Ibiza, home to the Experimental Beach Club and El Chiringuito (also Nikki Beach, Sunset Ashram and the Jockey Club). Wake up after your night out and head for a beach club where you can order a bottle of rosé, lobster for lunch and lounge on the daybeds, working on your tan. Most beach clubs open around 11am and you’ll need to book a daybed or lunch table ahead of time during the summer season. We love El Chiringuito’s on demand oysters (the restaurant part of the club has a designated oyster man who walks table to table with a bucket and oyster knife) and Experimental Beach’s fabulous frozen cocktails (also, sunsets!).

Experimental Cocktail Club beach in Ibiza.

If you’re into wellness, yoga, detox or hippie living, then Ibiza is your place. The island hosts many wellness-oriented programs throughout the year (check with your local yoga studio for leads because it depends on what teacher / yoga style you’re into). Otherwise, Google ‘Ibiza yoga’ to find dates that work or look up Yoga Ibiza as a starting point (they host low key yoga retreats and you can stay as many nights as you like). In the countryside, we love the La Granja farm/hotel for rest and relaxation. There are also tons of yoga and fitness studios, but our favorite is on the water: stand-up paddleboarding yoga @ SUP YogaPilates. Cruise around on a paddleboard while in upward dog. Then, feast on healthy, organic salads, smoothies and juices at one of the island’s Passion Cafes.

BONUS: SEEING BOTH IBIZA AND MALLORCA ON THE SAME TRIP

*Bonus* If you want to see two islands at once, consider Ibiza as its possible to make a half or full day trip to the nearby island of Formentera. Formentera has white sand beaches and sand-in-your-toes bars and cafes, ideal for lazy lunches (tip: our fave meal is at Juan y Andrea). There are also (from what we hear, ‘therapeutic’) sulfurous mud baths on the island, so dive in if you’re feeling adventurous and then wash the mud off on the nearby beach.

Catching rays in Ibiza.

If you’re sporty and love hiking and biking, then Mallorca is your best bet. For cyclists, the island has lots of biking routes and terrains – everything from hilly mountains to flat roads with ocean views. Hotels go above and beyond for cyclists, offering bike storage, washing, repairs and even packed meals for riders. For hikers, Mallorca is paradise. There are tons of walking paths near the beach and across the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. Order one of the Mallorca self guided trekking/hiking books on Amazon and strap on those hiking boots/cycling cleats. The best time to visit weatherwise is spring/fall (or summer if you can stand the heat).

Travelling with a tot in tow? Mallorca is super family friendly. The island has big airport with many direct flights originating in all major European cities. Hotels welcome tots with open arms, offering baby cots, kiddie menus, babysitting, kid friendly pools, kid-centered activities and kids clubs. Our fave spot for the family is the St. Regis, located by the ocean and a total kid-haven. Guests with little ones can join the Explorers Club where the kiddies receive a gift bag filled with a compass, passport and list of activities to kick start the hotel stay.

If you want an island that has a cool main city, then visit Mallorca so you can explore Palma. Take in the awesome architecture and wander the cobblestone streets in Old Town. Don’t miss the grand Mallorca Cathedral, part of which was renovated by the well-known modern architect Antoni Gaudi. Visitors can also check out the awesome Miro Foundation cultural center which showcases the works of Surrealist Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miró. And if you appreciate craft drinks, don’t miss Ginbo, an award winning artisanal gin bar in town. Or pick up lunch, dinner or drinks at the ultra stylish Portixol hotel.

Mallorca beach.

THE FINAL TIEBREAK: MALLORCA OR IBIZA

Both islands are legendary for fun in the sun and you can check out our guides for where to stay, what to eat and what to do here. But if you need to choose between Ibiza or Mallorca, here is our take: If you’re into parties, dancing, unbelievable nightlife and a great holistic wellness scene, Ibiza is your best bet. However, if you’re a sports enthusiast, traveling with family and or want to take it easy and enjoy the countryside, then Mallorca is your spot. Now, ¡vámonos!

It’s summer and you’re figuring out whether to visit Corsica or Sardinia for your holiday. Both islands bask in the Mediterranean sun, have rugged interiors and plenty of gorgeous beaches. The 7 mile channel separating the two islands is crossed via a 50 minute ferry ride. If you’re not able to fit both islands into one trip, here are our thoughts on how the islands are different, the best things about each island and whether Corsica or Sardinia is the right island for you.

THE CONTENDERS: CORSICA OR SARDINIA?

Corsica is a 3,350 square mile French island off the western coast of Italy known for wild boards, verdant hills and blue waters. In the summer, Corsica hosts Calvi on the Rocks, one the best summer music festivals in Europe. And did we mention the island has tons of amazing French cheese?

Sardinia lies 11 kilometers south of Corsica, covering 9,300 square miles (3 times the size of Corsica!). Sardinia has phenomenal sandy beaches, great wind for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing and boasts everything that is amazing about Italy – like the food! like the wine! like the style!

So, we’re here to help you decide which island to visit: Corsica or Sardinia?

THE TIEBREAKER: SARDINIA v CORSICA

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat who lives in London. I’ve spent a week in Sardinia on summer holiday (stayed in agroturismos and five-star digs and driven up/down the island looking for windy beaches to kite). I’ve also travelled through the rest of Italy on other trips. I’ve spent a ton of time in France and am heading to Corsica this fall (so post to be further updated). That said, a bunch of my friends have visited/spent whole summers on Corsica because of family on island. So I’ve chatted their ear(s) off to get the scoop for Travel Honey and help you figure out whether to visit Corsica or Sardinia below!

THE PROS AND CONS OF CORSICA AND SARDINIA

If you’re limited on time or logistics and need to choose between visiting Corsica or Sardinia, consider this:

If you love beaches, head to Sardinia where you can choose from 200+ sandy and pebble beaches with clear, bright blue water. Our favorite Sardinia beaches include Porto Pollo in the north, La Cinta in the west part of the island and Poetto beach in the south. These beaches have spots for refreshments and are amazing for water sports! If you want to explore, rent a car and beach hop. Sardinia has beaches near camp sites, pine forests, fishing villages and near the luxurious resorts of the Emerald Coast, a 55 kilometer stretch of coast where the ocean is an iridescent green color.

But if you prefer mountains with lush green vegetation, head for Corsica. Corsica is home to steep, granite peaks and rocky trails. It’s home to the legendary GR20 hiking trail which takes 15 days to hike and bisects the island, and Corsica National Park (there are tons of shorter hiking routes through the park). Wild cows and boar run amok in the hills, often straying into beaches and roadways (and causing headaches for local authorities). The island has a long-practiced and respected tradition of hunting in the mountains as well.

Corsica mountains.

If you’re looking for glamour and glitz, look no further than Porto Cervo on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast. This plush stretch of sand is home to Cala Di Volpe, a hotel known for old-school glamour, its enormous pool, beachside location and icon guests (like Jay-Z and Princess Diana). Spend your days shopping for Prada, Bulgari and Valentino near Porto Cervo’s main square, dine at the Porto Cervo Yacht Club, lounge with the cool cats at the Phi Beach or Nikki Beach clubs or hang by the water and spot mega yachts.

If you want a more low key, authentic experience, then Corsica is the better bet. To connect with the land, stay at Domaine de Murtoli, a private nature reserve and working farm with 10+ houses, 3 restaurants (one on the beach, one in a cave, one under ancient trees) located on 5,000 acres of land. Corsica has beautifully designed contemporary hotels like Casadelmar and La Plage Casadelmar as well but they are not as flashy as what you’d find in Sardinia.

Sardinia cove.

Meat-eaters and cheese connoisseurs – head for Corsica where you can feast on wild boars who forage for chestnuts. You can also sample cheeses from sheep and goats who thrive grazing in the hills. Corsican forests are filled with edible mushrooms and island bees make the best honey from nearby wildflower fields. Corsican food is hearty and stays close to land. Anyone who appreciates a good, thick, meaty stew or soup will love the island. When visiting, don’s miss the generous meats and cheeses served at Chez Seraphi, perched high up in the Corsican mountains.

Those who love pasta and fish will do well in Sardinia. The malloreddus is a dumpling shaped pasta with many ridges on its outer shell, made for sopping up sauce. This uniquely Sardinian pasta is traditionally served with tomato and sausage sauce and is available on most restaurant menus. Sardinia is also all about the ocean, seafood is fresh and plentiful. Head for any cafe or shack near the beach and order the grilled lobster or any gorgeous Mediterranean fish (even fish roe!). Our fave seafood spot is Fratirossi. For a more rustic meal, check out Agriturismo Su Connu where veggies and pasta are sourced right from the farm.

Last and this may be stating the obvious, but the question could come down to whether you simply want a more French (Corscisa!) or Italian (Sardinia!) experience on your holiday. Like French croissants, beret hats and bikes? Then all signs point to French Corsica. Like Italian Aperol Spritzes, fashion and pizza? Then Sardinia is your best bet.

THE FINAL TIEBREAK!

Both islands are great and you can read more about our take on Corsica here and Sardinia here. If you need to decide between visiting Corsica or Sardinia, here is our call: We recommend Sardinia for gorgeous beaches, glamour and delicious seafood. We recommend Corsica for rugged mountains, low key holidays and meat-enthusiasts. The choice may also come down to something as simple as to whether you are seeking a more French (Corsica!) or Italian (Sardinia!) vibe during your time away. So, onward and safe travels

These are Stephanie’s tips for her two week trip to Madrid and Barcelona with her husband and two boys, ages 8 and 10. The trip was focused on good food/wine, cultural activities (museums), and spending time outside.

Where do you live when you’re not traveling? Boston.

Who went on the trip? Our family of four (2 boys, ages 8 and 10 years old). Return trips for my husband and I. We each had been to Spain every year for past 8 years.

What was the Trip? Two weeks in Spain. Madrid (one week) and Barcelona (one week).

What were your interests/goals on the trip? The core “excuse” for our December visit was for a board meeting in Madrid, which took up a couple of days. Around that however we were fully focused on good food/wine, cultural activities (museums), and just spending time outside as weather in Spain was much more pleasant in December than weather in Boston.

Anything especially awesome?

Some outstanding adventures that we’d fully recommend. In Madrid: 1) private, curated family tour of the Prado through MadridExpert (we also did a walking tour through this company of Madrid which was great), 2) guitar & flamenco experience through AirBnB and 3) row boats in Retiro Park.

In Barcelona: 1) Runner Beans Gothic (private) tour of Barcelona. The best part was the Museum of “Giants”! They also have public tours for Gaudi and La Sagrada that we did as well. Interior of La Sagrada is most amazing. 2) AirBnB experience making paella. And 3) Bar Brutal!

And I didn’t think it was especially awesome, but my youngest son was obsessed with the Duck Store of Barcelona.

Also, be sure to squeeze in a day trip to Toledo (short train ride) from Madrid if you can. Wonderful walled medieval city.

Anything you wished you’d done differently?

We probably would’ve shortened Madrid visit at this time of year and stayed in Barcelona longer. Madrid was very, very hectic with holiday season (streets were PACKED); Barcelona was a breath of fresh air. In Barcelona, the visit to Gaudi park was disappointing. Too many people (and that didn’t seem to be b/c of the time of year).

Any other tips? Be sure to check out the restaurant TriCiclo (and others by same owners) in Huertas neighborhood in Madrid. Also, sunset at the National Palace in Madrid. In Barcelona, we spent a lot of time strolling the oceanfront with our kids on their scooters.

What would you do if you had one more day? If you had one less day? We didn’t have a chance to do the funicular over Barcelona, so that’s for next time!

Average cost per night of one hotel room and cost of an average entree? We rented AirBnB apartments in each city so maybe $150 Euros per night. Cost of entree probably around $20 Euro. Wine was cheap!!!

Trying to figure out whether to visit London or Paris? London has Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, The Shard, and Tower Bridge. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and Arc de Triomph Monument. Both cities are incredible places to visit for food, nightlife, culture and people. But if you’re short on time or can’t make it to both, here are our thoughts on how they are different, the best things about each place and whether London or Paris is right for you.

THE CONTENDERS: LONDON OR PARIS?

London is the political, cultural and financial capital of the United Kingdom (and arguably Europe, pre-Brexit). Located in south-west England, the city is bisected by the Thames river and home to over 8 million people (depending on what statistics you cite). British culture is renown for its monarchy, biscuits and tea, big red buses, bright red phone booths, rain, lush gardens, cozy pubs, strawberries, Pimms cocktails and tennis. Each of London’s neighborhoods has a distinct feel, so the city feels like a cluster of villages.

Then, there is Paris – the heart of Europe and one of the most romantic cities in the world. Paris is bisected by the Seine river and divided into twenty arrondissements (districts). Though only 2 million people live within the 20 arrondissements, millions more live in the surrounding suburbs. The city has deep historical significance and many cultural institutions. And speaking of culture – the French are known for fabulous baked goods, cheeses, wines, and everything that has to do with style and art.

So, London or Paris?

THE TIEBREAKER

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat who lives in London and I have travelled to Paris tons the past few years – mostly to visit friends, feast, visit new sights, or go on a lot of long walks. I’ve also travelled widely in both England and France, having visited the Cotswolds and seaside in England and Bordeaux, the Alps and Cote d’Azur in France. I’m a big fan of great food and getting outside to play in the snow or do anything related to water sports.

Big Ben in London

THE PROS AND CONS

My initial recommendation is to see both cities as they have so much to offer. But if you’re limited on time or funds or logistics and need to decide between London or Paris, then consider this:

If you’re travelling with a significant other and would like a romantic trip, go to Paris! There you can sit in a small cafe under the stars (or city lights), split a bottle of wine and a dozen oysters. Let the sparks fly. Then go on a long walk to the Eiffel Tower and and climb up (or take the elevator) to the top for bird’s eye views of the city. Afterwards, head for the Luxembourg Gardens with a picnic blanket, macarons from Laduree or Pierre Herme and French champagne. Sprawl out on the grass and people watch. Stay in one of the city’s over the top, fabulous hotels such the Royal Monceau or the Shangri La and order room service for breakfast in bed.

If you love fashion, head for Paris: the shopping is legendary, Paris is home to Fashion Week and tons of fashion-influenced cultural venues such as the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art and the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Paris’s best shopping is located on Rue Saint Honore in the 1st and 8th districts. Make sure to visit the Maison Kitsune boutique shop and the Le Bon Marche department store for the best items.

If you have kids and want to learn something from the world’s most stylish and “together” parents, head for Paris and take the kiddies to any restaurant, playground or park. There, see for yourself everything you’ve read @ Bringing Up Bebe and believe it when you see toddlers graciously snacking on escargot in bistros and politely playing on the monkey bars in parks.

If your travels have anything to do with work, and pending on where you work, consider London. As English is spoken (stating the obvious), you may be able to do some networking or catch up with clients as there is no language barrier. London is one of the world’s best places for works and there are so many industries here – media, finance, technology, retail, you name it. You’ll find lots of fresh ideas ao come to be inspired!

If you love diversity and creative cultural offerings that push boundaries, head for London. London has so much variety and you can find the best of anything you’re interested in here. Like food? Your choices runt he gamut from Ghanian cuisine @ Zoe’s Kitchen, to Italian @ Cecconis, to Sri Lankan @ Hoppers, to Chinese @ Park Chinois and to British @ Dinner by Heston. Like music?
If you love decorum and pageantry, London is your city. Cross the pond to wear a fancy, feather hat to afternoon tea, eat small cucumber sandwiches and show off your most proper manners. Visit the Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard who are dressed in big, bushy hats and red coats. At night, get tickets for the Tower of London Ceremony of the Keys, where the tower is “locked up” in a ritual that has taken place for hundreds of years. Oh, and nothing says pomp and circumstance like a horse Ride one through Hyde Park or drive outside the city for a proper hunt.

THE TIEBREAK

Since both cities have the truly great restaurants, hotels and cultural sights, we vote as follows: if your visit has anything to do with romance, fashion or family, think about Paris (find our guides and maps for the city here), but if you’re focused on work, want to see something cutting edge or over the top fancy, then London is a better choice (our London guides and maps are here). Safe journey or bon voyage!

Italy is amazing for so many reasons – vibrant culture, delicious food, stunning scenery and wonderful people. If you love Italy just as much as we do but have already seen the top sights, keep reading for our recommendations for the best off the beaten track Florence spots and Tuscany hidden gems.

We’ve collaborated with the Travel Savvy Gal to create a list of the best off the beaten path Florence spots and Tuscany hidden gems. Together, we know a ton about Italy. Lana (team Travel Savvy Gal) lived in Milan for three years and visited Florence over a dozen times. Lids (team Travel Honey) lives in London, explores Italy on weekends and recently returned from a two week road trip through Tuscany. Katy (also, team Travel Honey) lived in Rome during college and travelled around as well.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH FLORENCE

Florence was the heart of the Italian Renaissance in many ways, and is filled with beautiful artwork, cleverly crafted buildings and passageways, and boasts some of the best cuisine in all of Italy. Off the beaten path Florence is all about lesser known places away from the crowds, even though some of these picks are quite centrally located in the city! Head to these secret spots on your next visit:

Inhale @ Officina Profumo Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella. Affiliated with the nearby Basilica di Santa Maria Novella (which is also worth visiting!), this unassuming storefront awning leads you into a stunning centuries-old building that houses what is considered to be the world’s oldest pharmacy. In the late 1300s, the monks of the Basilica started producing aromatic concoctions like rose water to serve as a disinfectant in the time of the plague. Now there are several main areas of focus. You’ll enter into the perfume area where you can inhale the aromas of their historical recipes or sample scents to mix your own. In the pharmacy section, you tell the pharmacist what ails you and he or she will recommend a mix of essences to heal you, as they’ve done here for centuries. Or enjoy an infusion in the connected Tea Room. Even if you don’t order anything at the Tea Room, be sure to wander to see some of the historical machines for making herbal extracts and the nearby fresco-covered room. Although not far from the train station, this is definitely off the beaten path Florence as it is nearly impossible to wander in without knowing it’s here and seeking it out.

Officina Profumo Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella in Florence

Marvel @ the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte. The oldest church of Florence, the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte is just enough of a hike up from the far more famous Piazzale Michelangelo to be off the beaten path Florence for me. And the greatly reduced crowds agree. The church was built in 1018, so is now 1,000 years old, and has lovely detail and decoration both inside and out to appreciate. Since it is so high up compared to the rest of Florence, the courtyard out front overlooking the church cemetery also has breathtaking views of the city. Given its location, the sunset views will be just as nice as Piazzale Michelangelo, and in a far more relaxed atmosphere.

Views from e Basilica of San Miniato al Monte in Florence

Savor @ La Terrazza Continentale rooftop bar. Not to be confused with the nearby La Terraza above the Rinascente Department Store in Piazza della Repubblica, the rooftop bar of the luxe Hotel Continentale is an oasis that is perfect for a pre-dinner drink, or aperitivo. La Terrazza Continentale boasts lovely views of the Arno River and Palazzo Vecchio, and also has the best cocktails I’ve had at a rooftop bar in Florence to savor as you enjoy the view, especially at sunset. And since this is Italy, you’ll be offered some tasty small bites to accompany your drink. The bar doesn’t take reservations, but I’ve never had to wait too long for a table, although weekdays tend to be less crowded. To arrive, enter the lobby of the Hotel Continentale and ask for instructions to reach the rooftop bar. It’s a bit elaborate to find, so this rooftop gem is one of the most relaxed off the beaten path Florence destinations you can enjoy after a long day of sightseeing.

Drinks @ La Terrazza Continentale in Florence

TUSCANY HIDDEN GEMS

The Tuscan countryside is filled with rustling cypress trees, green hills and lush vineyards. Head to the countryside to check out these Tuscany hidden gems where you:

Relax @ La Bandita Country House. Drive two hours south of Florence to reach La Bandita, a peaceful, bohemian retreat with 360 degree views of Tuscan hills and sheep farms. The B&B was set up by John Voigtmann, a former NYC music executive, who moved to the Italian countryside to create a relaxed and authentic space. There is an infinity pool, fire pit, plush beds and incredible breakfasts with fruit, Nutella and tasty espressos. The lobby has a stellar collection of books and vinyl records. There are lots of wonderful hikes, walks and roads for bike rides just outside the B&B. Make sure to chat up the hosts – they will point you to the best local vineyards, gourmet spots for lunch and secret viewpoints.

La Bandita Country House Pool in Tuscany

Feast @ Terrazza del Chiostro. Drive 20 minutes from La Bandita Country House to the charming small town of Pienza. Here you can visit La Bandita’s sister property, La Bandita Townhouse, for a coffee and feast on some of Italy’s best salted caramel and chocolate gelato down the street at Buongusto (Bonus, this is another Tuscany hidden gem ??). However, the highlight of the town is a meal at La Terrazza del Chiostro, a gorgeous restaurant with large, sun-filled terrace overlooking Tuscany’s rolling hills. Perch under the big white umbrellas and order the fresh mozzarella, pici pasta, rabbit and pigeon dishes (along with 2-3 bottles of Italian wine). Camp out for the afternoon and watch the clouds roll over the nearby hills and vineyards. The restaurant is located on the side of town, behind a courtyard, so you’ll need to look for this spot to find it.

Lunch at Terrazza del Chiostro

Swim @ Torre di Moravola. Once you’re ready to explore further, drive two hours and find yourself just across the Tuscan border, in Umbria. There, discover Torre di Moralova, a medieval tower turned boutique hotel by architect Christopher Chong and designer Seonaid Mackenzie. Spend your days at the immaculate infinity pool, reading art and travel books and snacking on olives. Dinner is served al fresco and the peach tart is delicious. The minimalist chic bathrooms and organic bath and body products are highlights of the stay. Lots of hiking, biking and running trails are available if you decide to leave the pool. This hotel and surrounding area feels very Tuscan but is a little more laid back (think of Tuscany as Napa and Umbria as Sonoma).

These are Megan’s tips for her week and half long trip in the fall to Lucerne and Lugano in Switzerland then onto Menaggio and Santa Margherita in Lake Como and finishing in Tuscany. She and her husband are in their 30s and from Chicago. Their goals were to relax and eat good food.

Where do you live when you’re not traveling? Chicago.

Who went on the trip? Megan and her husband, who are both in their 30s.

What was the Trip? A week and half long trip in the fall to Lucerne and Lugano in Switzerland then onto Menaggio and Santa Margherita in Lake Como, Tuscany then finishing in Rome

What were your interests/goals on the trip? Relax and eat good food.

Anything especially awesome or things you wished you’d done differently?

Lucerne

We stayed at the Grand Hotel National. Location was great – a little pricey and even though we booked a queen room they charged us for the extra person since my reservation only said 1 (I know this is common in Europe but it screwed us at a lot of hotels!) Really wish I’d known about it before!
The hotel restaurants and bars were expensive so would definitely venture out.

We ate at Grottino 1313, which was amazing. It was a little outside the main touristy part of the city, but the food was so so good and service was incredible – they save your table for the whole night. We also ate at STERN Luzern, which was also amazing. Definitely two non-touristy spots that were excellent.

We rented paddle boats which made us feel like we were being ‘active’ on the lake without having to do much. I’ve heard that the big boat tour that most people do can get really crowded. Also, there was a noticeable difference between being there on a weekday and a weekend, so I would avoid weekends if possible.

Lugano
Train from Lucerne to Lugano is very expensive but beautiful views so a nice way to see a lot of Switzerland while you’re travelling. I think driving it could be pretty cool too but a little scary. We were told to book in advance but in hindsight I don’t think that was necessary.

We stayed at Hotel Splendide Royal, which was fine – location was very good, a short walk into the town area. It was a typical older European hotel.

Pizza is incredible here – it’s only 15 miles from Italy so definitely Italian food is the way to go.

The one thing I wish that we had done here (or in Lake Como) was to rent a motor boat. it’s surprisingly well priced despite most of Switzerland being so expensive! All you need is a driver’s license and they let you take it out onto the lake for an hour/afternoon etc – would recommend a bottle of wine and cheese -but book in advance once you get to the town. Avoid cabs in Switzerland at all costs!! It’s at least $20 to go 1 mile.

We took a bus from here to Lake Como – if you plan ahead and know the bus times (our hotel gave us the wrong time) then it is extremely easy. Pretty drive and very easy to get to Menaggio which is where we stayed in Lake Como.

Menaggio

We stayed at Grand Hotel Menaggio. Unless you want a small boutique hotel this is probably the best place to stay. It’s the only hotel with a pool and looks out over the lake. Location is great (any location is fine since it’s such a small town) – right next to the ferry which was very convenient. We went to Bellagio and Varenna just to check them out. I found Bellagio to be way too touristy/crowded. Varenna was very nice and comparable to Menaggio so I think it just depends on which side of the lake you’d prefer to be on. The other benefit of Varenna is I think it’s the only town with a main train station that takes you down into the rest of Italy (via Pisa). We took a ferry from Menaggio to Varenna the morning that we left which was easy and then the train to the coast.

Santa Margherita

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Miramare. It was expensive but worth it especially if you are looking for pool time/relaxation. If you’re planning to be a lot more active and not spend a lot of time at the hotel itself then you can probably do one of the smaller boutique hotels in the area. The hotel restaurant was excellent and so were the local hole in the wall spots we found. Can’t go wrong probably with any of the pastas here and the pesto in this region is the best thing we ate all trip. We ate at La Paranza – the pesto pasta with potatos and green beans was their signature and it makes me sad I can’t eat it every day:

Tuscany

We stayed at Castello de Nero, which was unbelievable. Everyone has their own small villa, the views and the pool are so nice and the food at both restaurants was incredible. It’s definitely a splurge but we planned to relax a lot of the time and so it was worth it. We didn’t want to leave but we went into the town and ate at La Gramola. A small restaurant that was one of the best meals of the trip. The bruschetta, truffle pasta and the meat special recommended by the waitress were all unreal:

We took the train from Santa Marg to Florence and then took a cab to the hotel – it was about $75. We preferred this over renting a car but we spoke to some people there who drove themselves. It’s nice to have a car when you’re there if you want to do wine tastings or explore more but we personally felt that the convenience of not renting/driving through downtown Florence was worth it!

Why is a honeymoon in France an awesome idea?

France has so much more to offer than a traditional beach-only destination. It’s the perfect spot for a post wedding trip if you’re looking for great culture, an easy flight and a place with solid infrastructure. Other noteworthy places for culture focused honeymoons include Sri Lanka, Morocco and Bhutan but these spots are a bit trickier to get to and involve more logistics (so we’ll leave them for another day).

Where are the best places to visit during your honeymoon in France?

Paris. You will likely arrive and depart France from Paris. Paris is one of the world’s greatest cities and you could have the best time spending your whole honeymoon here.

See this: Take in views of the Eiffel Tower or take lifts to the top for bird’s eye views of Paris. Walk up the Sacre Coeur Bascilica church and spend the evening watching the Moulin Rouge cabaret.
What time of year should you go?

Paris can be done year-round. If you’re heading for the beach in the south of France, go in the summer. If you want to ski the Alps, go in the winter. Wine country is best during the harvest season in the fall. If you want to watch the budget after you wedding, go in the off season as there is still amazing hiking in the French Alps in the summer and you can still go on long walks on the beach/in the countryside during winter.

Farmer’s market in St. Tropez

How long do you need for your honeymoon in France?

Well, it depends on how much time you can take off work and what you’re keen to do. Either way, go for at least a week. Do Paris for a few days and tack on another part of France such as the beach, wine country or winter sports in the Alps. Happy wedding and bon voyage ?

And brownie points ? if you tag #travelhoneymoons during your French adventure. We’ll repost the love.

Jenny’s tips for Madrid, Barcelona and along the southern coast from Cádiz to Valencia. She’s a freelance writer, solo traveller and eternal sun seeker. Her tips are best for a foodie, budget and culture seeking travellers who may not have been to Spain before.

How do you know Spain?

I studied in Madrid for 9 months and travelled along the coast from Valencia to Cádiz. I speak Spanish at an intermediate level and hope to buy property there one day!

Any hotels, restaurants or activities that shouldn’t be missed?

Madrid is definitely a foodie favourite. Next time you’re in Madrid, head to Plaza de Santa Ana and order the ‘rabo de toro’ at Lateral (don’t Google it until you’ve tried it!). I also really enjoyed the tapas at the Mercado de San Miguel; the empanadas were to die for! El Tigre is also a great shout for budget travellers – order a drink for a few euros and enjoy the enormous plate of food that comes with it for free! Make sure you try jamón serrano while you’re in the country as well…there’s nothing else quite like it.

There are some great and not so great hostels in Spain. The Sant Jordi hostels in Barcelona, are so much fun and know how to throw a fiesta! Sungate One in Madrid was fabulous – no bunk beds and each room has a balcony!

Casa Caracol in Cádiz is lovely too. You just have to do your research. If you’re looking for somewhere cheap in Benidorm, Pensión La Orozca offers unbeatable value for money for huge rooms with a bath and a balcony. In terms of activities, Retiro park in Madrid is a must do for a lazy afternoon stroll. It’s one of my favourite places in the world.

Go on a walking tour around Valenica – the mix of old and new is fascinating. Climb up to the Santa Bárbara castle in Alicante. Go whale watching in Tarifa (I saw killer whales, pilot whales and a sperm whale). There’s so much to do! And one of the best things about Spain is that no matter when you visit, there will almost always be a festival going on!

Anything visitors should avoid, e.g., tourist traps, overhyped stuff?

The beach in central Málaga was horrible! Dark, coarse sand, slime floating in the ocean and (oddly) overcrowded. Apparently if you head further east it gets better, but I didn’t stick around to find out!

Any other tips?

The bus and train networks are excellent! I’ve never had any problems getting around. If you’re looking for off the beaten track, go to Benidorm (hear me out!) and head east past the noisy beachfront to the little bays or ‘calas’ such as Cala Tío Ximo. They’re stunning and because they’re a small trek out of town, no-one else can be bothered to make the effort!

Teruel is a gorgeous little town in the middle of nowhere and I’d definitely recommend it for a day if you’re in the Aragon region. Spend a few hours of this exploring nearby Albarracín, a beautiful Medieval village full of historical treasures.

I’ve saved the best tip for last and am almost reluctant to give it up! Drum roll please…if you’re on the west coast (Costa de la Luz) go to Bolonia beach and soak up the turquoise water, silky soft sand, Roman ruins, shady forest and huge sand dunes. Buses run from Tarifa in high season, otherwise you’ll need to hire a car to get there.

Checkout Joe & Becky’s tips on where to stay and not to stay on the Amalfi Coast and tips for getting away from tourists. They’re a couple from Boston in their mid-thirties and their goals were to relax, visit museums, & see the top sites.

Where do you live when you’re not traveling? Boston

Who went on the trip? Couple in their mid-thirties

What was the Trip? Rome (3 days), Naples (1 day), Ischia (3 days) in the late summer/early fall.

What were your interests/goals on the trip? Relax, museums, see top sites, and attend friend’s wedding

Anything especially awesome? Hotel Mezzatorre in Ischia. It was excellent!

Plan for an evening tour (Colosseum) and small group or private tour guide for major sites where you can.

Anything you disliked or things you would have done differently?

You can probably avoid Naples including the Hotel Santa Brigida. Also avoid visiting popular tourist sites during midday (eg Pompeii, the Vatican, the Colosseum).

What would you do if you had one more day? If you had one less day?

Visit Capri for the day! If we had one less day, we would have skipped Naples.

Average cost per night of one hotel room and cost of an average entree? 3000/night. $25/entree.
