Hi RJ - Thanks for reaching out and for this info! As we note in our article on GPS: http://travelhoney.com/ultimate-guide-to-gps-for-europe/, if you don't use bluetooth, it's a little better - the directions play at the same time as the directions. So the directions are still going while you're on your call, but it's a bit annoying during the call!

Thank you this. Is it common that, when using maps online, it stops working once I receive a phone call over Bluetooth in the car? I have downloaded offline maps of the area and you'd think it would revert to that once a call call comes in. Strange...

Using Android 8.0

Cheers

Madam / Sir,
My wife and I are venturing on a road trip of Europe covering, in that sequence, Switzerland - Italy - Slovenia - Croatia - Slovakia - Hungary - Austria - Germany - Leichstenstein and back to Switzerland. We plan to take a car from Europcar. The trip is close to 3000 km and we plan to cover it in 18 days. We are both senior citizens.
We have Global T Sim of UK that can provide us data. We can beef up the data required, by extra payment. We shall not require too many phone calls.
Could you advise us if we should hire a GPS from Europcar or buy one for ourselves in Europe. How practical would it be to use Googlemaps on our cellphone for navigation ?
What is your view on Europcar ? Any recommendations ?
Thanks for your time.
Regards

In reply to <a href="https://www.travelhoney.com/how-to-use-offline-maps/#comment-4813">Suzie Wang</a>.

Hi Suzie - Thanks so much for reaching out! Do you plan to use MAPS.ME offline? Or do you want to be able to use data on your phone? If you are OK using the app offline and will not need to be online while you're away from the hotel (e.g., to look at opening times, etc.), then you can download your maps ahead of time on MAPS.ME. You can keep your US SIM card and turn your phone to airplane mode and be able to use the maps offline. If you want to have data on your phone, then it depends what U.S. cell phone provider you have. If you have Sprint or T-Mobile, you'll be able to use data abroad for free. If you have Verizon or ATT&T it's usually $10/day. Or you can use a SIM card, which is cheap and easy, and you'll be able to use data - and many also allow a limited number of texts and calls back to the U.S. I hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any other questions!

I'll bring my iPhone and use MAPS.ME during my European travel in May and June. I won't make calls nor text messages (won't use an international plan and just use a laptop to check emails). In such case, can I keep my US SIM card in my iPhone or do I need to use a global SIM card? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
