After months of COVID-19 quarantining, we know that you’re beyond excited to finally travel again, but you’re in search of a socially distanced vacation locale. The Azores should be your top travel choice. Here are 15 reasons why the Azores are best vacation spot to be socially distanced during COVID.

First a note on the Azores Islands for those less familiar with the islands. The Azores are a Portuguese archipelago. The nine islands are a lush paradise of volcanic crater lakes, glorious beaches and natural hot springs. We’ve focused on Sao Miguel, which is the biggest Azores island, because it has the most direct flights, so you don’t have to take multiple flights or ferries to get to another island. It also has the most beaches and hiking trails, so you won’t be too crowded. But if you want to venture out, check out which is the Best Azores island to visit.

1.  The Azores are currently COVID-19 free.

There were only 146 confirmed COVID-19 cases on all the islands combined, and as of the publication date of this post, the Azores are COVID-19 free. Check the up to date Azores COVID-19 numbers.

2. It’s easy to be socially distanced on vacation in the Azores during COVID, because the must-see attractions are all outdoors.

The must sees on Sao Miguel island are its spectacular volcanic crater lakes, including Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo; its lovely hot springs, especially in Furnas; and its beautiful black sand beaches. Each of these attractions are outside where it’s possible to be sufficiently social distanced. Don’t miss out on all the other must sees and hidden gems.

3.  Sao Miguel island has 20+ beaches, so you have plenty of sand to spread out and socially distance.

4. The Azores have amazing outdoor activities to make your socially distanced vacation a blast.

Sao Miguel offers a wide array of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, kayaking, canyoning, horseback riding, climbing, paragliding, whale watching and golfing. There are nearly 30 hiking trails on Sao Miguel alone that have been developed, marked and cared for by the Regional Government of the Azores.

5.  There are 8 different hot springs on Sao Miguel island, so you can always avoid a crowd during COVID.

All the major hot springs in the Azores are on Sao Miguel island. You won’t get overcrowded in the eight different thermal spring locations. The hot springs range from rustic and wild to developed and manicured with full amenities, like facials and massages. Which hot spring will you choose?

6.  The weather is temperate, so you can enjoy a socially distanced vacation in the Azores all year round.

The Azores benefit from a Gulf Stream climate where daily highs range between the 50-80°F all year round. There is never a wrong time to go; it just depends on your temperature preferences.  If you want to sun bathe on the beach, July and August are your best bet but June and September are a close second. You can also get beach days in April/May/October. Because of the humidity, when it’s sunny, the real feel is higher than the listed temps.  You can hike all year round, and the cooler months are great time to enjoy hot springs.

7.  It’s a short flight to the Azores from the US and Europe!

If you’re visiting the Azores from the U.S., it’s about a 4.5 hour flight from Boston, and if you’re coming from Portugal, it’s a little under 2.5 hours. If you’re still confused, find out exactly where the Azores are.

On June 15, Azores Airlines began flying from Lisbon to the Azores, and International flights to Boston, Toronto, Praia (Cape Verde), and Frankfurt begin on July 1. Currently for the summer, Azores airlines has daily direct flights from Boston to Sao Miguel island every day except Tuesday and Saturday. On Tuesday and Saturday, there are direct flights to Terceira and an inter-island flight can be taken to Sao Miguel.

TAP Portugal has already started flights from Newark to the Azores, but they begin direct flights from Boston three days a week on July 1. You can also fly from Boston via Lisbon on other days.

The Azores Airlines offers a free stopover to Europe. Azores Airlines is currently not affiliated with another airline or alliance, but it has a business class and has recently leased 6 new planes.

8. Flights to the Azores During COVID are cheap!

Flights during the summer typically peak at $1000 each way in July and August, but upon publication, flights from Boston to the Azores are around $300 each way on both TAP Air Portugal and Azores Airlines.

9.  The Azores islands are still a hidden gem

Even before travel declined due to COVID-19, tourism in the Azores had not yet exploded like other places in Europe. So you can feel comfortable moving about the island without fear of crowds.

10.  There are more cows than residents in the Azores.

The population in the Azores is only 250,000 people on all nine islands, but it produces more than a third of all milk consumed in Portugal and half of all the cheese consumed. And because cows don’t transmit the flu, that means more tasty cheese and less chances to get COVID-19 in the Azores!

11.  You don’t need to rely on public transportation on your Azores vacation.

Even before Azores COVID-19, we recommended renting a car when visiting the Azores. There are public buses, but their schedules are limited, erratic and often not on time. Taxis are expensive, and there are no Ubers.  Rental cars are relatively inexpensive. You’ll pay between 20-40 euros a day for a small manual, depending on the season.  You’ll tend to get better service and more flexible policies (like no charge for an extra driver) from the smaller rental companies. The roads are clearly marked, and Google Map is largely accurate.

12.  The Azores have a huge selection of vacation rentals, and small boutique hotels so it’s easier to maintain social distancing.

13.  There is lots of outdoor seating at restaurants.

The restaurants are now open on Sao Miguel, and because the weather is temperate, there are many options for outdoor seating. If you prefer to eat inside, you’ll just be required to wear a mask. The tables for both indoor and out are required to be socially distanced.

14.  If you want to cook on your socially distanced Azores vacation, there’s a great outdoor market.

Although restaurants on Sao Miguel have re-opened, you may want to be extra-safe and cook your meals. Then head to Mercado da Graca, where there is a huge array of fruits and vegetables along with a fish and meat market and an adjacent cheese shop aptly named O Rei Dos Queijos (King of Cheeses!).

15.  The Azores are on almost every list of COVID-19-safe vacation destinations.

Now that we’ve convinced you to make the Azores your next socially distanced vacation, what are the Azore’s COVID-19 requirements?

As of June 13, all new arrivals to the Azores must either provide proof of a negative COVID-19-19 test taken 72 hours prior to arrival or take a test upon arrival and await the results in isolation. Arriving passengers may await the test results in a private residence or contracted lodging of their choice. The results are expected to take no more than 12 hours. Travelers who wish to remain in the Azores for more than 7 or 14 days, will be required to test again on day 6 and 13 of their stay. Check the US Embassy in Portugal and Azores Airlines websites for up-to-date requirements.

The Azores have largely been a haven for backpackers, so the number of luxury villas available to rent is small but growing. This is the most comprehensive guide to villas in the Azores available today, including some hidden gems!

What Makes a Villa in the Azores?

First, we should establish what qualifies as a villa. We did some research and settled on this definition: a villa is “a country house or estate, especially when large or luxurious.” So, we’ll focus on standalone houses in the Azores that are four bedrooms or more and at least a little luxurious.  But as you’ll see, there are not many large luxury accommodations in the Azores. Therefore, some are not quite “luxury”. We’ve also listed some smaller options near each other that you can rent together to sleep a large group. A Little More Info on the Azores

Next, let’s get you familiar with the Azores. The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago of nine islands that is about 930 miles west of mainland Portugal (maps of the Azores). Above all, these volcanic islands provide spectacular natural beauty. Furthermore, it includes hot springs, crater lakes and amazing beaches with black volcanic sand. Some of the hot springs in the Azores are must-see if you are here. The easiest island to get to without a doubt and the largest of the Azores islands is São Miguel. That’s where you’ll find the largest selection of Azores villas without a doubt.

Which Azores islands Have Villas?

We’ve divided the villas by Azores islands – but as you’ll see, not every island has a villa.  And we should be upfront, if you’re looking for a luxury Azores villa of the sorts that is listed on a website like this one, then sadly, nothing yet exists. There’s also not a lot of design-forward villa options.  Most of the villas in the Azores are indeed family homes that have been turned into Airbnbs.  But if you’re interested in a big luxury villa in the Azores, there might be hope yet – scroll to the end of the post.

There are villa options on 8 out of the 9 Azores islands. We’ve ordered the islands so that the islands with the most villas are at the start of the list. A GUIDE TO THE BEST VILLAS IN THE AZORES

Best Azores Villas on São Miguel

As we noted above, São Miguel is the biggest Azores island (40 miles by 9 miles) and most populated. It also has the biggest selection of tasty restaurants and your best chance at nightlife. It boasts the most beaches, crater lakes, hot springs, and hiking trails. If you have less than a week, São Miguel is the best Azores island for you. Also, you can plan your 7 days itinerary to Sao Miguel and enjoy the island to the fullest. Furthermore, the island has the most options of villas in the Azores and the most luxurious villas.

1. La Maison ($$$$$)

Although lacking a view, this property is the most luxurious villa in the Azores. Relax by the pool or drink wine by the fire pit in this bright four bedrooms modern villa.  La Maison exudes minimalist luxury: a simple design with tones of gray and white with warm wood accents.

2.  Vivenda Luxuosa ($$$$$)

This spacious luxury villa in the Azores has a contemporary (although somewhat outdated) design and a beautiful private pool for chilling out and taking in the gorgeous sea views. Guests can soak tired muscles in the bubbling hot tub after a day of hiking. Four bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, an indoor garden, fitness room, satellite TV, leather sofas and a state-of-the-art kitchen make this a top choice.

3. Villa Várzea ($$$$$)

Rent 4 bedrooms in this traditional Portuguese villa or the complete 7 bedroom home on this beautiful estate. You can njoy mountain and garden views form the villa. It has ensuite bathrooms and on-site billiard room shared lounge and kitchen facilities. 10 minutes from Sete Citades Lagoon, this villa has the feel of a boutique hotel with its elegant furnishings, complimentary toiletries, water, tea, coffee, and fresh fruit.

4. Ocean View Água de Alto Main House ($$$)

With 5 bedrooms served by 2 modern bathrooms, this superbly located beach house in the Azores is well-appointed with wood flooring, cable TV, dishwasher and washing machine. In particular, sea views can be enjoyed from the garden and patio terrace with fire pit. Just 250 feet from Paraia da Pedreira, it includes free parking and free Wi-Fi.

5. Azores, Country House, Algarvia ($$)

This quaint country cottage has a private pool and gorgeous sea views from its lofty hillside position. Tile floors and comfortable furnishings can be found in the living room and dining kitchen which is simple but adequately equipped. Six bedrooms and 3 bathrooms for 13 guests round off the generous accommodation.

Best Azores Villas: Pico

After Sao Miguel, Pico has the next best selection of Azores Villas. It also has the next best selection of restaurants and is the island to visit if you enjoy hiking and wine. There is a broad range of villas from rustic renovated stone properties filled with charm to modern well-appointed luxury villas, many with a private pool and panoramic ocean or mountain views.

6. Casa da Vista Azul ($$$)

This villa offers breathtaking views across the island. You can enjoy the views from pool, garden and terrace. This beautifully renovated stone house has 4 bedrooms and 3 modern bathrooms. It boasts satellite TV, gourmet kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and washer/dryer and a shared lounge area. Ideal for exploring the area on foot, car or bicycle, it is located in Sao Roque do Pico

7. Casa da Altamora ($$$)

Catering for 12 guests in 6 bedrooms with 2 modern bathrooms, this well-maintained villa in the Azores exudes charm and character. Dine al fresco enjoying the fresh air and mountain views or relax with TV and Wi-fi in the comfortable living room. The eat-in kitchen is exceptionally well equipped and everything is clean and bright.

8. Atlantic Heritage Luxury Villa ($$$$$)

If you’re looking for a luxury villa in the Azores with infinity pool and terrace specifically, this new-built home is a top choice. Four ensuite bedrooms comfortably accommodate 8 guests. Additionally, the smart kitchen includes dishwasher, microwave, and fridge, and a la carte breakfast is available every morning and the living room includes Wi-fi, a Blu-ray player, satellite TV, and DVD player. Also, all of this is just 8 miles away from Pico Airport.

9. Casa do Ferreiro ($$$)

Presiding over stunning ocean views, this 4 bedroom luxury villa on Ilha do Pico is an award-winning renovation on the Architectural Route of the Azores. The ancient stone exterior contrasts sharply with the modern luxury interior which includes huge picture windows and an amazing dining kitchen with sliding glass walls. It makes the ideal getaway with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the lower floor and the dining kitchen upstairs although you’ll want to dine al fresco on the deck with those amazing views!

Best Azores Villas: Terceira

This is the second largest of the Azores islands with a good choice of luxury villas and spacious houses for larger families and groups. The standard of accommodation tends to be more modern and luxurious than the other islands. Several villas have private outdoor pools, are close to the seafront and within easy reach of the airport and Angra do Heroísmo, the UNESCO-listed historical capital of the Azores.

10. Casa Familiar ($$)

The homely Casa Familiar in São Bartolomeu, has 5 spacious bedrooms. It also has a fully equipped kitchen with a breakfast table and dishwasher. Additionally, the place has a spacious living/dining room with flatscreen TV and original exposed beams. Ideal for up to 9 guests, it has an outdoor patio, garden, barbecue and parking just 16 miles from the airport (shuttle transport available).

11. Martin Guest House ($$$)

The palatial Martin Guest House offers luxury accommodation on Tercia for guests that includes an outdoor pool and garden. Air-conditioned rooms have a flatscreen TV, minibar and Wi-Fi. Two living rooms, outdoor seating and games rooms with billiards table make this a popular Azores accommodation option just a mile from the Riviera sandy beach. This is unquestionably one of the best houses to rent in Terceira.

12. Magnificent Ocean Views – 5 bedroom house ($$)

Without a doubt, it’s hard to beat this luxury 5 bedroom Azores villa with magnificent ocean views from the furnished terrace and wrap-around balcony. Furnished in local style it offers a modern fully-fitted kitchen with stainless steel appliances, 5 comfortable bedrooms for 12 guests, 3 modern bathrooms, indoor fireplace and choice of sitting areas. Just down the street, there’s a swimming hole for a cooling dip. It is indeed a best choice for those who want to live in a comfortable setting amidst nature.

13. Extra Casa das Cinco ($$$)

Absolutely a stunning house in the Azores with a contemporary vibe and private pool overlooking the ocean. Choose from three options: a luxury apartment for 3 with bedroom and sofa bed; a garden view apartment with bedroom and sofa bed to sleep 3, or the 2-bedroom house for 4. Alternatively, book the whole 4 bedroom luxury villa. It has a gourmet European-style kitchen and living room with a wall of sliding glass for enjoying sunsets and ocean views. Free bikes, top diving and seaside nearby.

14. Casa do Becco ($$)

Within sight of the ocean, this well-furnished luxury villa home in Tercia has a comfortable sitting room with wood floors and flatscreen TV, 4 bedrooms, 3 modern bathrooms and a fully equipped modern kitchen with dishwasher. It includes Wi-Fi and daily housekeeping. Relax and enjoy the ocean view from the sun terrace which is in an excellent location in Angra do Heroísmo.

15. Casa dos Franceses ($$$)

Located in the west of Terceira Island, this luxury villa in Serreta has an open-plan living, fully equipped kitchen, 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for 12 guests. Outdoor terrace with stunning views across the ocean to Graciosa, São Jorge, and Pico. Spacious contemporary accommodation on 2 floors with everything you need a short walk away (bakery, fishmonger, grocery store and excellent restaurant) for enjoying a relaxing holiday in the Azores.

Best Villas in the Azores: Sao Jorge

São Jorge is best known for its hiking and its cheese.  Although less populated and less visited than its close neighbor Faial Island, has a better luxury villa option. Unfortunately, São Jorge villa accommodations are limited in number. But they provide an excellent base for exploring the island with its steep cliffs and stunning ocean views.

16. Holiday home Caminho do Porto ($$$$$)

This luxury holiday villa in the Azores in undoubtedly one of the best options to stay. It has 7 bedrooms for up to 19 guests, one family bathroom and the benefit of air-conditioning. In addition to that, it has a fully-equipped kitchen that includes a dishwasher, fridge, washing machine, and the sitting room has satellite TV and Wi-fi. Spend time outdoors on the furnished patio savoring breathtaking ocean views.

Santa Maria Villas

Many visitors are drawn to Santa Maria villas in the Azores due to the island’s white sandy beaches. Others visit due to the dramatic rock formations and interesting places to visit in and around Santa Maria town. Santa Maria is also part of the Eastern Group of Azores islands and is a 3ish hour ferry ride from São Miguel island.

17. Casa de Almagreira ($$$)

Obviously there are many options to stay in Santa Maria but this one tops them all. This traditional Azores villa has a living room, full kitchen, 4 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. You can enjoy breathtaking mountain views from the furnished patio. Rustic but clean and comfortable, guests are welcome to cook in the kitchen. You can also dine at the restaurant 1.2 miles away in Santa Maria town.

Flores Villas

Named after its abundance of wildflowers, this westernmost island in the Azores has villa accommodation for all tastes. Enjoy ocean views while enjoying accommodation in a private hotel. You can also opt for a relaxing farm stay with a mix of traditional and modern design.

18. Acquamarina Flores  ($$$)

This attractive Azores hotel is right in the town of Santa Cruz das Flores and steps from the ocean. Additionally, it has plain but comfortable bedrooms, tiled bathrooms and a garden for relaxing in the sun. With a total of 6 bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, it offers individual rooms or the whole villa so check carefully when you book. Enjoy breakfast in the cafe before heading out to explore the town, beach and Porto das Poças with ferries to Corvo.

19. Aldeia da Cuada ($$$)

Located in Faja Grande, this delightful farm stay accommodation in the Azores has the benefit of a well-appointed bedroom, private bathroom and kitchenette with a fridge, stovetop, kettle, coffee machine, and microwave as part of the farm complex. There is also a 4 bedroom house available. Enjoy continental breakfast before hiking nearby. The property also has a garden, bar, barbecue, ATM and Wi-Fi.

Graciosa Villas

Dominated by the huge volcanic caldera, Graciosa island has typical Portuguese architecture. Moreover, the natural resources in Graciosa (along with Flores and Corvo) have also been classified by UNESCO as biosphere reserves.

The traditional villa rental is basic but comfortable and well-equipped for an enjoyable stay.

20. Casa Lagar de Pedra ($$$)

Rent this traditional house or just a room at Santa Cruz da Graciosa and enjoy 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and plenty of space for 10 guests. Although the furnishings are nothing to write home about, it has traditional volcanic rock feature in the living room. It also has sea and mountain views, a well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, refrigerator and a full range of appliances make this a very well-appointed Azores villa with many quirky features.

Best Azores Villas: Faial

Although Faial is the third most visited island in the Azores, it has one of the poorest selections of villas in the Azores. The lack of luxury Azores villas is likely because Faial is most popular with tourists visiting by boat. We’ve listed the two best options, a traditional villa home and a modern air-conditioned luxury villa in Horta, but neither are luxury.

21. The Family House ($$$)

Located on Faial island, this 4 bedroom whitewashed house on the Azores is on the outskirts of Horta enjoying superb ocean and harbour views. Besides that, you can relax in the sunny garden watching the boats or walk into town for shopping and dining. Additionally, the kitchen of this house includes a coffee machine, oven, microwave and toaster and there’s a barbecue for outdoor dining. Without a doubt, this is one of the best places to live in the Azores.

22. Big & Beautiful House in Horta, Casa Matriz ($$$)

Unquestionably, a great place to stay in the Azores with your family. With 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, this modern holiday villa in Horta has a private courtyard and several balconies. Also, here you can enjoy stunning views of the port over the rooftops. Moreover, rooms are air-conditioned and typically Portuguese with tile floors and bathrooms. Also, there’s a cozy sitting room with sofas and a huge family kitchen. The kitchen has dishwasher and marble worktops. You’ll also have your separate laundry. Besides enjoying the surroundings, you can walk to local markets, restaurants and the port is pretty easy.

Corvo Villas

Last but not the least is Corvo Island. With less than 500 inhabitants, the Azores Island of Corvo is undoubtedly the smallest and most northern island. Also, it does not have any accommodations that meet our definition of a villa. But we suppose, that’s part of the appeal :).

Sao Miguel Itinerary Overview

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 1

Arrive in the main city, Ponta Delgada, and explore! Many visitors arrive on a red-eye, so we’ve included a couple breakfast places that open early.  Most hotels will allow you to pay for breakfast even if you didn’t book the night before, and they will allow you check you in early if they have space. The map is a great way to wander Ponta Delgada, just click on the itinerary markers as you go to see what’s around you.

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 2

Day 2 is for Sete Cidades (the famous must-see double crater lakes) on the west side of the island. We’ve included our two favorite viewpoints, two optional hikes and things to see as you travel towards the west coast. Check the webcam before you go to Sete Cidades, it’s not worth visiting the viewpoints if it’s fogged in. Sete Cidades is also the name of the town in the valley below the lakes, which is worth stopping for if you have time.  In the summer, the road between the two viewpoints and down to the town is lined with hydrangeas. We’ve included lunch options in Sete Cidades and Mosteiros (on the west coast where there are less touristy food options than in Sete Cidades). The west coast also has Termas da Ferraria, the amazing hot spring in the ocean.  It’s still cool to see if you don’t go in – but if you’re game for a dip, check the tide and plan the rest of the day based on that, because you can only go at low tide. For transport, note that it’s about a 30 min drive from Ponta Delgada to the Miradouro da Vista do Rei viewpoint of Sete Cidades, and another 10 minutes to the town of Sete Cidades. It’s another 15 minutes to Termas da Ferraria then 40 minutes if you go straight back on the coast (add another 10 if you go back through Sete Cidades).

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 3

Head to Lagoa do Fogo, another crater lake that is often foggy – check the webcam and consider doing this visit whenever Lagoa do Fogo is clear! There’s a cool hot spring near Lagoa do Fogo, but if you’re trying to decide on one hot spring to do, the ones in Furnas are better in our opinion. If it’s hot out, you can head to a beach. For optional physical activities there’s the Quatro fábricas da Luz hike on the south coast and there’s also a hike you can do from the viewpoint down to the actual lake of Lagoa do Fogo. There are two ways to drive to Lagoa do Fogo from Ponta Delgada: north to Ribeira Grande then south or past Lagoa and then north.  For transport, it’s about a 30 min drive from Ponta Delgada to Lagoa do Fogo and about 10 minutes to the Caldeira Velha hot spring. The Quatro Fabricas da Luz hike is about 25 min from Ponta Delgada and about 30 min drive from Lagoa do Fogo. Ribeira Granda is about a 15 min drive north of Lagoa do Fogo.

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 4

There are many amazing hikes along the north coast. If you’re not into a hike, there are also amazing viewpoints and beaches along the north coast to the east of Ribeira Grande. We suggest lunch on Santa Barbara beach, which is still enjoyable in all weather. Or head a little further up the coast to Praia dos Moinhos. If it’s not beach weather, wander around the town of Ribeira Grande or finish up any activities you missed on previous days in Ponta Delgada or at the Caldeira Velha hot springs if you missed them before. Our two favorite hikes along the north coast start about   40 minutes from Ponta Delgada.

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 5

Head to Furnas, which is quieter and quainter than Ponta Delgada. The town is on an active volcano, so the highlights are: hot springs, cozido (a stew baked in the ground!) and Lagoa das Furnas (a crater lake). You can either head north towards Ribeira Grande then down to Furnas, or along the south coast and then north, they’re about equidistant. Both the Terra Nostra Hotel and Furnas Boutique Hotels have amazing restaurants, but otherwise the restaurant choice is somewhat limited. There are three awesome hot springs, one at each of those hotels and Poca da Dona Beija. Both the Terra Nostra and Poca da Dona Beija are public, so they can get a lot busier on the weekend. There are two options for a hike. The “Grená – Pico do Ferro – PRC22SMI” hike starts from the viewpoint of Lagoa das Furnas (Pico do Ferro).  “Lagoa das Furnas – PRC6SMI” is more of a flat walk that just goes around Lagoa das Furnas. Try to see the viewpoint of Lagoa das Furnas when the sun is out, you can see the green of the lake better. Also, go early or late if you can, because there can be tour busses. In terms of transport, Furnas is about 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada and 25 minutes from Ribeira Grande.

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 6

There are two waterfall options for this day listed in the itinerary. Option 1 is the South Coast. You can also keep driving up the coast to Nordeste, stopping at viewpoints and circle back along the north coast.  They are no must sees, and it’s 3+ hours of driving, but you’ll be able to see a lot of the island in addition to the South Coast waterfall. Option 2 is on the North Coast, you’ll hike through the forest then can swim under this waterfall (you can skip the hike if you like).  There’s also a hot spring at the end of this hike. For transport,  Povoção is about an hour from Ponta Delgada. Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande is about 30 minutes from Ponta Delgada.

Sao Miguel Itinerary – Day 7

On your final day, we suggest visiting the tea plantations, because it’s easy to do after you check out of your hotel and doesn’t require showering like a hike or swim. It’s also a good option if the weather is bad. You can also head back to the beach or do more hiking. For transport, the tea plantations are about a 30 minute drive from Ponta Delgada.

Should you visit the Azores or Madeira? Both are amazing islands off the coast of Portugal and we’ll help you find the right island for you.

You’re excited to visit Portugal but can’t decide whether to visit the Azores or Madeira. Both are amazing islands off the coast of Portugal with a mild climate, lush green hills and fabulous Portuguese food. It’s possible to visit both the Azores and Madeira in one trip (there is a direct 2 hour flight from São Miguel, the Azores main island) to Madeira on TAP Air Portugal, but if you’re limited by time or logistics, here’s our take on whether the Azores or Madeira is the best destination for you.

THE CONTENDERS: AZORES OR MADEIRA?

 The Azores are an archipelago of nine islands 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal. São Miguel, the main island (and the one we focus on for this post) is the biggest (spanning 40 miles x 9 miles) and most populated (140,000+ residents) in the archipelago. São Miguel is known for its crater lakes, bubbling hot springs, black sand beaches, and stunning hiking routes. The island is also home to Ponta Delgada, the largest city in the Azores, filled with tasty restaurants and charming cobblestone streets.

 Madeira lies 669 miles off the coast of Portugal. The island, 35 miles long and 13 miles wide, is best known for its majestic mountains and winding levadas (irrigation canals) as well as its rich cultural offerings in Funchal, the main city (think museums, galleries and gardens). There are no natural sandy beaches on Madeira, so folks head for the sister island, Porto Santo, by ferry for proper beach days.

Both places are gorgeous and offer something for everyone, but if you’re unable to visit both, here’s our advice on the best destination for you: the Azores or Madeira.

THE TIEBREAKER: AZORES V. MADEIRA

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat who lives in London and who has traveled to both the Azores and Madeira. I’ve spent five days driving around Madeira and made 2 trips days long trips to São Miguel, Azores. I’ve also traveled across mainland Portugal – everywhere from the vineyards of Douro Valley, to Lisbon, Porto, the beaches of the Algarve and beyond. Portugal is one of the most beautiful places in Europe and the country’s islands are it’s hidden gems.

THE PROS AND CONS

If you’re deciding between visiting the Azores or Madeira, here’s our advice:

If you want an wild and rugged destination, head for São Miguel in the Azores. Azores tourism is still in its infancy, so there’s plenty of room to go off the beaten track and explore. Get there before the crowds. The island is also volcanically active – there are lava fields, hot springs, crater lakes and fumaroles. Locals feast on cozido, a meat and vegetable stew, slow-cooked by steam underground. São Miguel is surrounded by gold and black sand (and pebble!) beaches and there are incredible thermal pools for soaking. Our favorite pools include Dona Beija in Furnas and Caldeira Velha in Ribeira Grande. The island is filled with hiking trails (maps can be found here) and pristine lakes for SUPing, kayaking and canoeing. In short, the Azores are an eco-paradise. There are also 8 other islands in the Azores archipelago to visit, so once you decide to visit, you’ll need to decide which is the best Azores island to visit.

But if you’re looking for an island that welcomes tourists with open arms, head for sleek and refined Madeira. Things are mellow, there is no volcanic activity, but plenty of five star hotels (see Reid’s Palace and Quinta da Casa Branca) and fancy dining spots. Madeira has the legendary Museum of Contemporary Art and the hip Madeira Film Festival. There are manicured botanical gardens and you can spend the afternoon sitting in a toboggan, getting pushed down Funchal’s hills by men wearing fancy white suits. Hiking, while amazing for those who make the effort, is optional. You can simply drive into the clouds and to the top of Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third highest peak.

If you’re a carnivore who likes cheese, it’s no contest, head for the Azores. São Miguel has more cows than people and the steaks are out of this world. Dine on medium rare tenderloin steak with three pepper sauce, potatoes and red wine at Restaurant da Associação Agrícola, it’s heaven. The Azorean cows also make legendary cheese. Queijo São Jorge is the most well-known cheese, produced on the nearby island of São Jorge. This cow’s milk cheese is semi-hard and holds a protected geographical status certification, indicating superb quality. Once you’ve eaten enough steak and cheese, move on to something sweet, the local, small and sweet Azores pineapple, grown on Sao Miguel plantations.

If you’re into gourmet meals and Michelin stars, Madeira is your spot. Head for Restaurant Vila do Peixe where the catch of the day is spread over ice and you can choose the best type and size fish for you. Or pop over to one of the island’s Michelin-starred places, Il Gallo d’Oro and William. Wherever you end up eating, don’t miss eating limpets (ocean snails that look and taste like clams) in garlic butter sauce and drinking vinho verde (our favorite white wine, especially the bottles produced by Quinta de Azevedo). Here’s our full guide to Madeira restaurants.

If you’re looking for a ton of evening activities (dancing, bars, nightlife), then head for Madeira. There is over the top dancing at Vespas Club and a rowdy bar scene at FX Sports bar. You can also stroll around old town Funchal, talking in the sights and popping into one of the various cafe/bars like Barreirinha Bar Café or Venda Velha (the local poncha drink is a must, its a mix of distilled sugar cane alcohol, honey, lemon juice). For classy drinks, get a glass of wine at The Wine Hotel. In São Miguel on the other hand, you’re best bet is watching stars over a bottle of Portuguese red wine. That or a chill drink at the Azor Hotel or Grand Hotel bars in Ponta Delgada. Occasionally, listening to live music at Raiz Club or dancing Arco 8, warehouse/art gallery/space.

If you’re coming from North America, the Azores are easier to get to and you can get a free stopover. It’s about a 4.5 hour direct flight from the east coast’s of the U.S. and Canada. There are no direct flights from North America to Madeira, but there are more direct flights from Europe to Madeira than there are from the Azores.

And if age is just a number, know that Madeira gets a ton of older folks visiting from Europe. Known as the island of eternal spring, British, German, French and Spanish retirees flock to the island in droves (because mild climate, gorgeous views, amazing food and fancy hotels). So don’t be surprised if you see more older travelers in Madeira compared to the Azores.

In summary, both islands are amazing with fabulous food, stunning ocean views and spectacular hiking. Islet is surrounded by cliffs famous for Red Bull diving championship. Arrange private boat transfer by asking your accommodation for tips or jump on one of the boats departing from Vila Franca.

Quinta dos Sabores was my favorite restaurant.

My favorite activity was the nature hike with Minuvida.  The guides were super knowledgeable and it was cool to learn about the flora/fauna of the area and have the cozido dinner. Wish we got to do another hike with them!

Dislikes/things you would have done differently? I’m glad I did canyoning but I feel like its not for everyone. It was very cool to jump into the waterfalls but I didn’t enjoy climbing over the slippery rocks in a wetsuit. Still glad I did it though!

If you had one more day?  If you had one less day? If I had one more day, I would have done a longer hike with the team at Minuvida. If I had one less day, I would have skipped the hot springs at the Terra Nostra Hotel, the color was off-putting.

Any hotels, restaurants or activities especially awesome?

We stayed 4 nights in Ponta Delgada and 2 nights in Furnas.

• I absolutely LOVED Casa das Palmeiras.  The staff there was so wonderful and I loved the whole aesthetic and location.
• We had one of my favorite meals at Rotas do Vinho, with awesome streetside live music next door.
• Casa da Rosa was one of our favorites for a late night dinner
• We loved Bar Colegio, where the owner plays the guitar most nights and on Friday nights they have jazz. The food is phenomenal, wine list is excellent – US prices, but worth it, we loved it.
• I could have spent half a day in the Carlos Machado museum but we rushed through right before our flight, such a bummer, it was amazing!
• One of my favorite days of all was going to the quaint town of Povocao, then having a fresh seafood lunch at Ponta do Garajau Restaurant and swimming at Fogo Beach.
• I also loved hiking Sete Cidades and the thermal pools at Ferreria!
• We had a great long lunch at Bar Caloura then went swimming down on the beach with the local kids

Dislikes/things you would have done differently?

• We would have booked hotels earlier, we decided last minute to go, and there wasn’t as much availability a few weeks out.
• Casa Hintze was fine but not wow
• Didn’t love Vila Franca Islet, but it may have been because of the lousy weather and peak number of people there.

If you had one more day?  If you had one less day? If I had one more day, I would book a sport fishing trip. If I had one less day, I’d base at Casa das Palmeiras for 5 nights, enjoy their amazing breakfasts and head out for long day trips – it’s so nice to be on a small island where you can fit in so much!

Any other tips?

• Definitely book your rental car far in advance.
• Heed the warnings about bringing an old or inexpensive swimsuit, you’ll likely toss it when you get home!
• I wish I’d packed — granola bars for a quick breakfast or snack for hiking.
• Swing by the liquor factory ‘Mulher de Capote’, taste “Queen of the Island”, their amazing version of Bailey’s, and pick up a bottle to stick in your suitcase.
• Seek out Pico’s Atlantis white wine. Try, immediately, tremocos, the white lupini bean starter that is offered at most restaurants.
• We had the best meals when we let the staff order for us.
