If you want to be in the heart of Lisbon near most bars and restaurants, the best places to stay in Lisbon is the Barrio Alto, Chiado or Baixa.  If you want something quieter with good river views, try Alfama. Be warned, Lisbon is full of steep hills, especially north and east, the longer your uphill walk will be (or take advantage of the trams or cheap Ubers!).

There’s a train into town, or we picked up our rental car in the morning and after stop in Cascais headed to Sintra, a unique village full of palaces and castles. We left the rental car place at about 10:15am, and we wished we’d left a little earlier to give us more time in Sintra.
