Why Go To Lisbon? These Amazing Places to Stay!

If you want to be in the heart of Lisbon near most bars and restaurants, stay in Barrio alto, Chiado or Baixa. If you want something quieter with good river views, try Alfama. Be warned, Lisbon is full of steep hills, so the farther you are from the river to the north and east, the longer your uphill walk will be (or take advantage of the trams or cheap Ubers!).

How To Get To Lisbon?

See TAP Airlines if you want cheap direct flights to Lisbon from the U.S. You won’t lose a day traveling if you do an overnight flight there and a late afternoon flight home because of the time change.

From the airport, you can take the Aerobus (3.60 euros), which leaves about every 10 minutes and takes you to the city center; a taxi (about 20 euros); an Uber (10-15 euros but it varies); or you can schedule a pick-up from your hotel.

How To Get Around Lisbon?

Try to walk as much as possible to really experience Lisbon. But there are many steep hills, so Ubers, taxis, tuktuks and trams are all good options, especially to Belem and the Alfama. Taxis and tuktuks are the most expensive options. Ubers are very cheap and their drivers are most likely to speak English. The trams are a good experience, but they can get crowded.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Interest

Here are Travel Honey’s suggestions for the best places to visit in Portugal based on your interests and travel style.

First Timers Wanting to Hit the Must-Sees. If it’s your first time visiting Portugal, start with a few days in Lisbon. Add on a day trip to see the castles in Sintra or hit up the local beaches by heading to Comporta or Cascais. If you have a few more days, head to Porto for more culture or fly south to Faro to dip your toes in the ocean and relax on miles of beach. Check out the Travel Honey Portugal Itinerary.

Getting Beachy. Portugal’s best beaches are in the southern Algarve region. Fly into Faro and choose your adventure.
Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Region

Mainland Portugal is roughly 3.5 times the size of Massachusetts and can be broken up into 5 regions. If you want to know where to visit in Portugal based on popularity, the three most visited destinations are greater Lisbon, north to Porto and the Douro Valley, and the Algarve along the south coast. Portugal also has two autonomous regions: Madeira is an archipelagos off the coast of Morocco and the Azores is an archipelago off the coast of southern Portugal.

Porto and Douro Valley The green and hilly northern part of the country. Many vineyards, forests and farms.

Central Starting just underneath Porto, this area is diverse and filled with spa towns, forests and vendors of traditional handicrafts.

Greater Lisbon The capital is located on the coast, in the central part.

Alentejo The southern-central part of the country filled with sleepy villages, cork trees and olive groves.

Algarve The sunny, southern coast of Portugal.

Azores Islands Group of green islands located far off the coast of Portugal in middle of Atlantic Ocean.

Madeira Southern island located off the coast of Morocco with a climate of year round spring.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Time of Year

It’s hard to decide where to visit Portugal by time of year, because it can be great year round! But the best weather in Portugal is anytime during the spring, summer and fall. The weather is chilly and more rainy during the winter, but you can get more than just glimpses of sun. The winter is also the perfect time to go to avoid crowds and get the most bang for your buck. In the summer, head for the beaches of the Algarve, Cascais and Comporta when the average daily highs reach the upper 70sF. You can also catch hydrangea season in the Azores from late May through August. Just beware that everywhere in Portugal is busier in the summer. It’s also a popular weekend destination for Europeans, so if you want to find deals and less crowds, especially in the cities, try mid-week.

If you’re going during a peak time, which is generally the summer and weekends in the major towns and cities, or want to stay at a small hotel or AirB&B, consider reserving a room with free cancellation as soon as you know possible dates – at the least you’ll have a back-up. You should also make restaurant reservations for popular restaurants during peak times.

Fall and spring are the perfect time for outdoor activities and thus the best time to visit the Azores, Madeira and Douro Valley (especially during the harvest season). Lisbon and Porto work well year round. The average temperature in Lisbon is 75F in July and 52F in January.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Passport & Visa Requirements

No matter where you’re planning to visit in Portugal, if you’ll be in Portugal for under 90 days, a visa is not required for U.S. and most European citizens. From the U.S, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure and you must have two pages for each entry stamp. Additional information from the U.S. State Department about Portugal, including travel requirements, is located here.

Visa and passport requirements for other countries may be located here.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Paying for Stuff

Currency: Regardless of where you visit in Portugal, just know that it’s all on the Euro.

ATMs/Credit Cards: Our advice is always have a stash of cash on hand. Fancier and bigger establishments and those around touristy areas, usually take credit card but not always and often not American Express. ATMs in Portugal are fairly common but are less prevalent (and sometimes run out of cash) in more remote places like the smaller islands of the Azores.

Tipping: Like most European countries, tipping is 5-10% (10% when there’s heavier service involved) in restaurants.

Money saving tip: Drink Portuguese wine. Vinho Verde is especially tasty and you can often find a bottle on the menu for around 10-15 euros.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Food & Drinks

Locals eat all their meals later than in the U.S. Typically, hotel breakfasts don’t start until 8 or 8:30 and restaurants don’t open for lunch until 12pm (locals eat around 2pm) and dinner until 7pm (locals eat after 9pm). Bars don’t get busy in cities until after 12pm and they go late.

Meals are not a rushed affair, so if you’re in a hurry, let your server know. Restaurants do not ask if you’re ready for the check and will only bring it if you ask for it (say “A conta, por favor”).

Meals are a lot cheaper than in the U.S., especially if you drink Portuguese wine. Like in most European countries, you’ll also get served free snacks with your drinks (nuts, chips, etc.). But restaurants often charge for bread and will not serve tap water (even though it’s safe to drink), requiring you to buy bottled water.

At less fancy restaurants you’ll often see a list of fish, but they only have the fish that’s caught that day. If you like tuna very rare, I’d recommend showing a photo of how you want it cooked.

Take away coffee is hard to find, so do like the locals and sit (or stand!) and have an espresso.

You can also decide where to visit in Portugal based on food! Portuguese regions, even cities and towns, are known for specific food and drinks. These are noted in each Travel Honey itinerary, but we’ve listed some must tries anywhere you go!

Seafood is amazing wherever you go near the coast, but some local favorites include: octopus, bacalao (salted cod), codfish fritters (bolinhos de bacalhau or Pastéis de bacalhau) and limpets. Also try the fish of the day, which usually split in half and grilled.

Chouriço a flavorful pork sausage often served flaming!

Stews (cozidos) especially in the Azores where they cook them in the ground.

Whatever pastry is famous in the area (like Pastéis De Nata in Lisbon).

Portuguese wine a variety of wines are made in Portugal and they’re generally cheaper than imported wines. Try the Vinho Verde, which is the name of a region of Portugal where the wine grapes are grown.

Port is also commonly produced in Portugal, especially the Douro Valley.

A cold glass of Sagres and Super Bock, the local Portuguese beer.

Portugal: Using Your Data & Phone

Get a SIM card, it’s super easy and the service is good. Vodafone has a holiday SIM with 5GB of data, 500 min. Local calls/texts and 30 min. calls/texts to the U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand. There’s also a 1GB option for 10 euros that only includes local calls/texts. They both last for 30 days. Read Should I buy a Portugal SIM card for more information to make your decision.

Portugal: What to Read, Watch & Listen Before You Go

As you’re deciding where to visit in Portugal, brush up on books, movies and tunes from Portugal! Read selected prose of Fernando Pessoa, one of Portugal’s greatest writers. Watch “Blood of My Blood”. The movie tells the tale of a blue collar family living in suburban Lisbon. Highly acclaimed at several international film festivals. Listen to anything by Sam the Kid, star of Portugal’s rap scene.

Don’t worry because many travelers aren’t sure either and we’re here to help! This remote archipelago of 9 islands and 8 formigas (Portuguese islets) lies in the North Atlantic Ocean about 1500km (930 miles) due west of Lisbon, Portugal and 3380km (2100 miles) east of Washington D.C. in the USA.

The islands lay between 36° and 43°N Latitude and 25° and 31°W Longitude and they cover an area that extends for over 600km (373 miles). If you look at the Azores islands map, you will see that they lie roughly northwest-southeast in orientation.

WHERE ARE THE AZORES: AN INTRODUCTION

The autonomous region of the Azores is regarded as the westernmost point of Europe which can be seen on any Azores islands map as the islands are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. As well as being a major port of call for transatlantic vessels, the main industries on the Azores are tourism, fishing, cattle and dairy farming.

The capital city of the Azores is Ponta Delgada on São Miguel island. Visitors will find the city pleasant and easy to explore with European shops and stores lining the marble-cobbled streets. The population of the Azores in 2011 was just 246,772 and the currency is the Euro.

Due to their remoteness and self-containment, the islands have very little violent crime, although there is a small amount of petty crime, theft and drug-related incidents, but this happens anywhere in the world, and overall the islands are super safe and tourist friendly.

Read on for more specific information on where the Azores are located. Or jump ahead to figure out the Best Azores island for you.

WHERE ARE THE AZORES VIA MAP COORDINATES AND DISTANCES?

The main airport in the Azores for those arriving by air is Ponta Delgada (PDL) Airport on São Miguel island.

Lajes Field (TER) on Terceira island is an international airport and U.S. Airforce base. The islands on Faial (HOR) and Pico (PIC) also have airports for mainly inter-island flights.

The islands’ main airline is Azores Airlines which connects the islands with Boston, USA and mainland Europe. It is part of SATA Group which also offers flights to Canada, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, the Canaries and Madeira. Portugal’s TAP airline flies between Lisbon and just began flying direct from Ponta Delgada to Boston. Check out more info on Azores flights, including a free stopover.

WHERE ARE THE AZORES VIA MAPS AND LOCATIONS?

To find out where the Azores are, it’s helpful to look at an Azores islands map. You will see that the islands are divided naturally into three main groups:

To the east are São Miguel, Santa Maria and the Formigas Reef.

In the center of the archipelago you will find Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico and Faial.

The two remaining islands of Flores and Corvo mark the westernmost point of Europe.

Each of the nine major islands has its own distinct character and geography. We provide a brief overview of each island shown Azores islands map below.

Where are the Eastern Azores?

São Miguel

Covering 759km², this is the largest and most populated island in the Azores. Nicknamed the Green Island for its lush vegetation, it is home to the capital, Ponta Delgada. Major natural attractions include whale and dolphin watching, 20+ amazing beaches, the Lake of Fire (Lagoa do Fogo), the green pastures in the Picos region, hot springs and the volcanic debris field that bridges the two massifs that make up the island (Sete Cidades Massif and Agua de Pau Massif).

Santa Maria

Generally warm and dry, Santa Maria has white sandy beaches and chimney rock formations. It is home to the European Space Agency satellite tracking station.

Graciosa

Known as the “White Island” Graciosa is dominated by a mile-wide caldera. The main town of Santa Cruz has charming Portuguese architecture including a historic church.

Terceira

The second largest island on the Azores map, Terceira is home to the Azores’ oldest city, Angra do Heroísmo, the historical capital of the archipelago and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

São Jorge

This long, thin island has tall cliffs, a pretty church built in 1460 and celebrates many cultural festivals. It’s also known for its cheese, and has great hiking.

Pico

At 446km², Pico is the second largest Azores island and home of the highest mountain in Portugal, the Ponta do Pico. It is nicknamed the Black Island due to the black volcanic earth which is favored by historic UNESCO-listed vineyards (the wine is fantastic!). It has three main volcanic peaks. The capital is Madalena and the island has received a Gold Award for sustainable tourism.

Faial (Pronounced “fayal”)

Faial is part of “The Triângulo” with Pico and São Jorge. Popular for tourists, it features Faial Nature Park, Capelinhos Volcano and a cool lighthouse.

Where are the Western Azores?

Flores

With an abundance of wild flowers (hence its name) Flores has many lake-filled craters on the Central Massif. Nearby Monchiquet islet is the westernmost point of Europe.

Corvo Island

Known as the Island of the Crow, Corvo is the smallest and northernmost island on the Azores map. It features sheer cliffs, ancient lava flows and the protected Caldeirão volcanic crater.

DISTANCES BETWEEN MAJOR CITIES

In addition to learning where are the Azores, it’s helpful to understand the distances between the island.

Santa Cruz Das Flores (West Azores) to Velas (Central Azores) 266 km / 165 miles

Velas (Central Azores) to Ponta Delgada (East Azores) 45km / 152 miles

Ponta Delgada (East Azores) to Santa Cruz Das Flores (West Azores) 511km / 317 miles

Sao Miguel inhabitants have a distinct accent unlike anywhere else in Portugal. English is also widely spoken due to this being the main tourism destination.

HOW LOCATION OF THE AZORES ISLANDS AFFECTS CLIMATE

The Azores islands have a mild, temperate climate with the warming effects of the Gulf Stream giving them one of the mildest winters in Europe. Throughout the year temperatures in the Azores range between 16°C (61°F) and 25°C (77°F). They never see temperatures above 30°C (86°F) or below freezing in the main, populated areas. Ocean temperatures range from 17°C (63°F) in winter to 25°C (77°F) in summer.

Although the surrounding seas on the Azores map have a favorable influence on air temperatures, it also means that the climate in the Azores is generally humid, wet and cloudy. The islands have an annual rainfall totaling 958mm (37 inches), mainly in the winter months. If you want to know the best time to visit, checkout our month-by-month comparison.

HOW THE AZORES WERE FORMED

Now that you have a better sense of where are the Azores, you’re likely wondering, how did the islands originate so far from other land?

The Azores are steep and rocky which gives a clue to their formation. They are the result of volcanic activity below the sea along the Azores Triple Junction and the Terceira Rift. The most recent volcanic activity was in 1957 when the Capelinhos Volcano erupted offshore from Faial Island.

The islands you see on the Azores islands map are in fact the tips of some of the tallest mountains on the planet, although most of the landmass is underwater. Mount Pico on Pico Island is the highest point in Portugal standing 2,351m (7,713 feet) above sea level. So imagine how high that mountain actually is when measured from the ocean floor!

It is thought that the first and oldest island to be formed was Santa Maria, 8 million years ago and the youngest is Pico, which was formed 270,000 years ago. However, following the volcanic eruption in 1957, a new islet was formed and named Sabrina Island. You won’t find it today on any Azores islands map as it quickly sank back into the sea.

Some of the most interesting sites for visitors to the Azores are the result of ancient volcanic activity. These include lava tubes, hot springs, black sand, vivid blue and green lakes and coastal lava fields.

This unique landscape makes the Azores a phenomenal place for hiking and other outdoor activities.

HISTORY OF THE AZORES ISLANDS

Now that you have a better idea where are the Azores, we’d like to give you a quick overview of the islands’ history. The Azores Islands were first permanently settled in 1492 after being recorded on an early map of Gonçalo Velho, a captain sailing under the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator. He claimed the islands for Portugal and named them after the açor (goshawk), a bird which was common at the time, although not necessarily found on the Azores.

Early Settlers

Over the next two centuries, more people settled on the islands from many different places, giving the Azores a remarkably diverse and unique culture, dialect and cuisine. As any Azores islands map will show, due to their isolated location, the islands did not have too many people who were eager to settle there.

Sheep were introduced for meat and the early settlers had to clear the land, planting grain, sugar cane, grapes and plants for food. Gradually they introduced chickens, pigs, rabbits, cows and goats to enable them to be self-sufficient.

However, these people may not have been the first inhabitants to reside on the Azores. Archaeologists found earthen structures carved into the rocks that may be the burial chambers of inhabitants dating back over 2,000 years.

Overcoming Devastation

In 1522, the Azores Islands were devastated by an earthquake. The resulting landslide hit Vila Franca do Campo, the early capital, taking 5,000 lives. After the earthquake, Ponta Delgada became the capital, and today Vila Franca do Campo is a thriving port and hub for ocean-going yachts and fishing boats.

After the earthquake, the islands rebuilt and have now long attracted writers, philosophers and more than one pretender to the Portuguese throne!

As you can see in the Azores island map, the islands hold a strategically important and unique position in the mid-Atlantic ocean. The islands were used in World War 2 as an air and naval base for the Allies. And the U.S. Navy still maintains a fleet at Praia da Vitoria today.

In 1976, the Azores Islands became an Autonomous Region of Portugal.

WHERE ARE THE AZORES ISLANDS?

The Azores archipelago of nine islands is about 930 miles west of mainland Portugal. Their sheer cliffs, deep calderas (craters) and steep mountains give a clue to their volcanic origin. This also provides other volcanic phenomena such as hot springs in the Azores, along with caldera lakes and black volcanic sand on some of the beaches.

Marking the extreme westerly point of Europe, the Azores archipelago stretches 400 miles from the largest island, São Miguel in the east to tiny Corvo and Flores island in west, which are both UNESCO recognized Biosphere Reserves. Largely self-sufficient, the islands have thriving farming, dairy and fishing industries as well as sustainable tourism.

As a leading expert in travel to the Azores, we offer in-depth information about the Azores, where to find the islands’ natural hot springs and the best hotels in Sao Miguel, Azores’ biggest island.

Read on to discover more about the Azores hot springs, where to find them and what they have to offer.

WHAT MAKES THE AZORES HOT SPRINGS SPECIAL?

Azores hot springs are thermal springs that allow geothermally heated water to rise up from the center of the earth. As their name suggests, the water is usually above human body temperature making it pleasant to bathe and relax in the steaming pools.

The water in São Miguel hot springs often has a high mineral content and may occasionally have a distinctive smell, depending on what minerals are present. For example, the iron-rich hot springs are orange in color.

Hot springs have been used for centuries as treatments for rheumatism and arthritis as well as for skin conditions including eczema. Bathing in the Azores hot springs can be physically and mentally restorative, creating a harmony of body, mind and nature.

A dip in the Azores hot springs is therapeutic after a day of sightseeing or hiking. It’s a relaxing and sociable experience as you enjoy the warm mineral-laden waters surrounded by lush vegetation, far-reaching views and stunning natural scenery.

SAO MIGUEL HOT SPRINGS

All the major hot springs in the Azores are on Sao Miguel, the largest and most populated island in the archipelago. Some of these thermal pools are located in peaceful natural surroundings while others have been developed into manicured spa pools with full amenities.

Below, you will find information about the most well-known Azores hot springs with an overview of what each natural thermal pool has to offer.

With five beautiful thermal pools surrounded by lush tropical plantings, Poça da Dona Beija hot springs offers a truly natural experience surrounded by exotic plants.
The hot springs are part of the Ribeira dos Lameiros stream and were developed in 1988. The pools vary in depth, which makes them particularly suitable for families with children, or those who are nervous about their first Azores hot springs experience.

Most pools at Poça da Dona Beija maintain a temperature of 102°F (36°C) with one pool that is slightly cooler. The high iron and mineral content of these hot spring waters makes the local mud ideal for cleansing mud baths and peloid treatments.

The Azores boasts hundreds of miles of rocky volcanic coastline, which means there are lots of Azores beaches to choose from! Whether you want to swim, surf or simply relax under an umbrella and listen to the waves, you’re sure to find your ideal beach on one of the nine different islands.

Last year, 39 Azores beaches were given Blue Flag status, meaning they have excellent facilities and superb water quality. The majority have lifeguards, beach umbrellas, toilets and parking nearby (although the more out-of-way beaches don’t). Most Azores beaches have volcanic black or red sand — but you can find a golden sand beach if you know where to look.
AZORES BEACHES: EAST ISLANDS

SÃO MIGUEL

The most visited of the Azores islands, São Miguel has a variety of beaches to suit everyone from families to surfers and hikers. One of the most popular is Praia do São Roque, a ten-minute drive east of the capital Ponta Delgada. It’s a pretty beach in a sheltered bay, with cafes and restaurants lining the nearby beach road.

Heading eastwards, the town of Agua De Alto has a long sandy beach, easily accessible from the road, with a beach bar and restaurant overlooking the ocean. Further east still, on the edge of Ribeira Quente is Praia do Fogo, a lovely beach in a horseshoe-shaped bay backed by high cliffs, where the water is heated by thermal hot springs.

São Miguel is the most popular Azores island for surfing. If you’re keen to give it a try, there are several places to go. Praia de Santa Bárbara, is a long stretch of sand on the north coast near Ribeira Grande. Blessed with powerful swell, it’s one of the best spots for surfing and bodyboarding on the island. There’s a handful of surf schools and surf shops nearby where you can take lessons and rent boards.

On the south coast, Praia do Pópulo is a Blue Flag beach popular with locals, with surf schools and a surf shop nearby. More experienced surfers can head to Santa Iria a bay east of Ribeirinha on the North Coast only accessible on foot.

Many of São Miguel’s beaches are suitable for families with children. Around a ten-minute drive from Ponta Delgada is Praia das Milícias. Accessible via a walkway, the sand slopes gently to the sea, making it good for swimming.

Further east near the town of Vila Franca do Campo, Praia da Vinha da Areia has the added benefit of a small water park, should the sea be too rough for swimming. In the town of Povoacao Praia da Povoação is a rocky beach which boasts an outdoor swimming pool, children’s playground, and snack bar.

While many Azores beaches are easy to get to, you can also find some which are more private and out-of-the-way. On the North coast, Viola Beach is rugged and beautiful, with high sea cliffs, and a waterfall falling into the sea. Accessed on foot, the closest facilities are in the nearby town of Maia. Also on the north coast, Praia dos Moinhos is a lovely beach set between two rocky peninsulas, with a popular café with outdoor seating.

Over on the east coast, Praia do Lombo Gordo is a long way down a steep single track road, but you’ll be rewarded by breathtaking scenery — and no crowds. Easier to get to, Mosteiros Beach on the west coast has dramatic rock formations in the sea and is a popular place to watch the sunset.

SANTA MARIA

Next door to San Miguel, the island of Santa Maria gets the most sun making it a good choice if you fancy spending some time on the beach. While most Azores beaches have black volcanic sand, unusually, Santa Maria is blessed with a golden sand beach, Praia Formosa.

Outside Vila do Porto on the south coast, it has shallow water good for swimming and facilities including toilets, showers, and a snack bar and restaurant. Between May and September, you can take a ferry between São Miguel and Santa Maria — a journey of three hours.

AZORES BEACHES: CENTRAL ISLANDS

PICO

Of the central group of Azores islands, Pico is the largest. While most of this island’s coast is rocky, there is one sandy beach, Praia do Canto da Areia, on the northeast coast. A beautiful beach with rock pools at low tide, it has a small snack bar, showers and toilets. Pico also has many natural ocean swimming pools where you can take a dip. For more details, check out the Travel Honey Pico itinerary.

TERCEIRA

Outdoor lovers should head to Terceira, which has stunning natural landscapes, and an extinct volcano that can be explored. The island has two sandy beaches. On the east coast, the town of Praia da Vitória has a beach adjacent to the marina, with sun umbrellas, changing rooms and showers and close to several restaurants and bars. There’s also a small beach on the south coast in Angra do Heroísmo, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

FAIAL

Faial is another island of great natural beauty and a hiker’s dream. There are two sandy beaches; Praia do Porto Pim is a sheltered beach close to the picturesque town of Horta, in at the south east corner of the island. The beach has safe shallow water, and several places to eat with sunset views. On the east coast, Praia do Almoxarife is another very pretty, slightly rockier beach close to a campsite and a couple of restaurants.

Pim Beach in Horta on Faial Island

GRACIOSA

Graciosa is a tiny, unspoiled and mostly rural island. It is blessed with one sandy beach in the town of São Mateus (otherwise known as Praia ) on the east coast. The beach has shallow water for swimming, a restaurant with outdoor seating, sun umbrellas and sunbeds. Nearby is the extinct Caldeira da Ilha Graciosa and the Furna do Enxofre, a huge volcanic cave, which visitors can go inside.

SÃO JORGE

The island of São Jorge doesn’t have any beaches but there are a handful of places to swim, mainly around the towns of Calheta and Velas.

AZORES BEACHES: WEST ISLANDS

FLORES AND CORVO

The westernmost Azores islands of Flores and Corvo have some of the most untouched of all the Azores beaches. On Flores, Fajã Grande is reached from a variety of hikes, and is in a beautiful natural setting, with waterfalls cascading down cliffs. There are few facilities apart from a camping area, outdoor showers and a small café. Corvo has one sandy beach, Praia da Areia on the south coast, at the end of a hiking trail, which has shallow rock pools at low tide.

AZORES ISLANDS BEACH SAFETY

People say the Azores ‘isn’t a beach destination’ because of the strong Atlantic currents. But if you pay attention to the different safety flags, you shouldn’t have any problems entering the water at any Azores beaches. A red flag, for example, means no swimming; a yellow flag means swimming is discouraged. A purple flag warns of Portuguese Man O’War jellyfish. Here is a guide to all the flags.

Before you go, you should also check the weather, which can be quite changeable, even in summer. The Spot Azores website has set up webcam feeds on popular Azores beaches.

WHEN TO VISIT AZORES ISLANDS BEACHES

The year-round mild weather means you can enjoy the beauty of the Azores islands beaches at any time of year. But to make the most of them we recommend visiting in summer. The water is the ideal temperature for swimming, the sea is calm, and the most popular beaches have lifeguards on duty.

If you’re keen on hiking or photography however, you might want to travel in spring or autumn, when the beaches are less crowded. Both are amazing islands off the coast of Portugal and we’ll help you find the right island for you.

You’re excited to visit Portugal but can’t decide whether to visit the Azores or Madeira. Both are amazing islands off the coast of Portugal with a mild climate, lush green hills and fabulous Portuguese food. It’s possible to visit both the Azores and Madeira in one trip (there is a direct 2 hour flight from São Miguel, the Azores main island) to Madeira on TAP Air Portugal, but if you’re limited by time or logistics, here’s our take on whether the Azores or Madeira is the best destination for you.

THE CONTENDERS: AZORES OR MADEIRA?

The Azores are an archipelago of nine islands 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal. São Miguel, the main island (and the one we focus on for this post) is the biggest (spanning 40 miles x 9 miles) and most populated (140,000+ residents) in the archipelago. São Miguel is known for its crater lakes, bubbling hot springs, black sand beaches, and stunning hiking routes. The island is also home to Ponta Delgada, the largest city in the Azores, filled with tasty restaurants and charming cobblestone streets.

Madeira lies 669 miles off the coast of Portugal. The island, 35 miles long and 13 miles wide, is best known for its majestic mountains and winding levadas (irrigation canals) as well as its rich cultural offerings in Funchal, the main city (think museums, galleries and gardens). There are no natural sandy beaches on Madeira, so folks head for the sister island, Porto Santo, by ferry for proper beach days.

Both places are gorgeous and offer something for everyone, but if you’re unable to visit both, here’s our advice on the best destination for you: the Azores or Madeira.

THE TIEBREAKER: AZORES V. MADEIRA

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat who lives in London and who has traveled to both the Azores and Madeira. I’ve spent five days driving around Madeira and made 2 trips days long trips to São Miguel, Azores. I’ve also traveled across mainland Portugal – everywhere from the vineyards of Douro Valley, to Lisbon, Porto, the beaches of the Algarve and beyond. Portugal is one of the most beautiful places in Europe and the country’s islands are it’s hidden gems.

THE PROS AND CONS

If you’re deciding between visiting the Azores or Madeira, here’s our advice:

If you want an wild and rugged destination, head for São Miguel in the Azores. Azores tourism is still in its infancy, so there’s plenty of room to go off the beaten track and explore. Get there before the crowds. The island is also volcanically active – there are lava fields, hot springs, crater lakes and fumaroles. Locals feast on cozido, a meat and vegetable stew, slow-cooked by steam underground. São Miguel is surrounded by gold and black sand (and pebble!) beaches and there are incredible thermal pools for soaking. Our favorite pools include Dona Beija in Furnas and Caldeira Velha in Ribeira Grande. The island is filled with hiking trails (maps can be found here) and pristine lakes for SUPing, kayaking and canoeing. In short, the Azores are an eco-paradise. There are also 8 other islands in the Azores archipelago to visit, so once you decide to visit, you’ll need to decide which is the best Azores island to visit.

But if you’re looking for an island that welcomes tourists with open arms, head for sleek and refined Madeira. Things are mellow, there is no volcanic activity, but plenty of five star hotels (see Reid’s Palace and Quinta da Casa Branca) and fancy dining spots. Madeira has the legendary Museum of Contemporary Art and the hip Madeira Film Festival. There are manicured botanical gardens and you can spend the afternoon sitting in a toboggan, getting pushed down Funchal’s hills by men wearing fancy white suits. Hiking, while amazing for those who make the effort, is optional. You can simply drive into the clouds and to the top of Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third highest peak.

If you’re a carnivore who likes cheese, it’s no contest, head for the Azores. São Miguel has more cows than people and the steaks are out of this world. Dine on medium rare tenderloin steak with three pepper sauce, potatoes and red wine at Restaurant da Associação Agrícola, it’s heaven. The Azorean cows also make legendary cheese. Queijo São Jorge is the most well-known cheese, produced on the nearby island of São Jorge. This cow’s milk cheese is semi-hard and holds a protected geographical status certification, indicating superb quality. Once you’ve eaten enough steak and cheese, move on to something sweet, the local, small and sweet Azores pineapple, grown on Sao Miguel plantations.

If you’re into gourmet meals and Michelin stars, Madeira is your spot. Head for Restaurant Vila do Peixe where the catch of the day is spread over ice and you can choose the best type and size fish for you. Or pop over to one of the island’s Michelin-starred places, Il Gallo d’Oro and William. Wherever you end up eating, don’t miss eating limpets (ocean snails that look and taste like clams) in garlic butter sauce and drinking vinho verde (our favorite white wine, especially the bottles produced by Quinta de Azevedo). Here’s our full guide to Madeira restaurants.

If you’re looking for a ton of evening activities (dancing, bars, nightlife), then head for Madeira. There is over the top dancing at Vespas Club and a rowdy bar scene at FX Sports bar. You can also stroll around old town Funchal, talking in the sights and popping into one of the various cafe/bars like Barreirinha Bar Café or Venda Velha (the local poncha drink is a must, its a mix of distilled sugar cane alcohol, honey, lemon juice). For classy drinks, get a glass of wine at The Wine Hotel. In São Miguel on the other hand, you’re best bet is watching stars over a bottle of Portuguese red wine. That or a chill drink at the Azor Hotel or Grand Hotel bars in Ponta Delgada. Occasionally, listening to live music at Raiz Club or dancing Arco 8, warehouse/art gallery/space.

If you’re coming from North America, the Azores are easier to get to and you can get a free stopover. It’s about a 4.5 hour direct flight from the east coast’s of the U.S. and Canada. There are no direct flights from North America to Madeira, but there are more direct flights from Europe to Madeira than there are from the Azores.

And if age is just a number, know that Madeira gets a ton of older folks visiting from Europe. Known as the island of eternal spring, British, German, French and Spanish retirees flock to the island in droves (because mild climate, gorgeous views, amazing food and fancy hotels). So don’t be surprised if you see more older travelers in Madeira compared to the Azores.

THE TIEBREAK

In summary, both islands are amazing with fabulous food, stunning ocean views and spectacular hiking. If you need more details, checkout Which is the best Azores island to Visit or our Madeira Overview here. If you have time and the logistics work, as always, see both, but if you need to choose… We recommend the Azores for wild nature, rugged beaches, a low key tourist scene and delicious steaks and cheeses. We recommend Madeira for a sleek, easy and culturally-focused experience, with buzzing nightlife and superb seafood.

And if you’re ready to pack your bagsfor the Azores, check out the Travel Honey Azores and Madeira itineraries which include the Sao Miguel 7 day itinerary, map and regional guide, the Sao Miguel hotel and lodging guide, and the Pico 5 day itinerary and map.

Colleen’s tips from her 4 day trip to Iceland in October with her brother and friend. They thought Iceland rocks and did as many activities as possible during their visit.

Who & what? This was a short trip. I went with my bro and bestie. We did Airbnb and stayed in the heart of town.

Any lodging, restaurants or activities especially awesome? Go to Blue Lagoon and check out Reykjavik. Then visit Vik, which has my favourite black sand beach with black fjords. Also, visit the Golden Circle to see the waterfalls and geysers. We did an off road vehicle that was nuts like a monster truck with tires bigger than us. It was fun but not a must. We also did a night tour to try to see Northern Lights – it was cool but we didn’t see the lights.

If you had one more/less day? If I had one more day, I would go across to the glaciers…they were a far drive, past Vik. If I had one less day, I would skip the off roading monster truck.

Any other tips? It was October so warmth was key! Keep in mind there are good restaurants in Reykjavik but they are super pricey! And if you stay at a nice hotel, a concierge could help you book stuff.
