Why Go To Lisbon? These Amazing Places to Stay!

If you want to be in the heart of Lisbon near most bars and restaurants, stay in Barrio alto, Chiado or Baixa. If you want something quieter with good river views, try Alfama. Be warned, Lisbon is full of steep hills, so the farther you are from the river to the north and east, the longer your uphill walk will be (or take advantage of the trams or cheap Ubers!).

How To Get To Lisbon?

See TAP Airlines if you want cheap direct flights to Lisbon from the U.S. You won’t lose a day traveling if you do an overnight flight there and a late afternoon flight home because of the time change.

From the airport, you can take the Aerobus (3.60 euros), which leaves about every 10 minutes and takes you to the city center; a taxi (about 20 euros); an Uber (10-15 euros but it varies); or you can schedule a pick-up from your hotel.

How To Get Around Lisbon?

Try to walk as much as possible to really experience Lisbon. But there are many steep hills, so Ubers, taxis, tuktuks and trams are all good options, especially to Belem and the Alfama. Taxis and tuktuks are the most expensive options. Ubers are very cheap and their drivers are most likely to speak English. The trams are a good experience, but they can get crowded.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Interest

Here are Travel Honey’s suggestions for the best places to visit in Portugal based on your interests and travel style.

First Timers Wanting to Hit the Must-Sees. If it’s your first time visiting Portugal, start with a few days in Lisbon. Add on a day trip to see the castles in Sintra or hit up the local beaches by heading to Comporta or Cascais. If you have a few more days, head to Porto for more culture or fly south to Faro to dip your toes in the ocean and relax on miles of beach. Check out the Travel Honey Portugal Itinerary.

Getting Beachy. Portugal’s best beaches are in the southern Algarve region. Fly into Faro and choose your adventure.
Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Region

Mainland Portugal is roughly 3.5 times the size of Massachusetts and can be broken up into 5 regions. If you want to know where to visit in Portugal based on popularity, the three most visited destinations are greater Lisbon, north to Porto and the Douro Valley, and the Algarve along the south coast. Portugal also has two autonomous regions: Madeira is an archipelagos off the coast of Morocco and the Azores is an archipelago off the coast of southern Portugal.

Porto and Douro Valley The green and hilly northern part of the country. Many vineyards, forests and farms.

Central Starting just underneath Porto, this area is diverse and filled with spa towns, forests and vendors of traditional handicrafts.

Greater Lisbon The capital is located on the coast, in the central part.

Alentejo The southern-central part of the country filled with sleepy villages, cork trees and olive groves.

Algarve The sunny, southern coast of Portugal.

Azores Islands Group of green islands located far off the coast of Portugal in middle of Atlantic Ocean.

Madeira Southern island located off the coast of Morocco with a climate of year round spring.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal by Time of Year

It’s hard to decide where to visit Portugal by time of year, because it can be great year round! But the best weather in Portugal is anytime during the spring, summer and fall. The weather is chilly and more rainy during the winter, but you can get more than just glimpses of sun. The winter is also the perfect time to go to avoid crowds and get the most bang for your buck. In the summer, head for the beaches of the Algarve, Cascais and Comporta when the average daily highs reach the upper 70sF. You can also catch hydrangea season in the Azores from late May through August. Just beware that everywhere in Portugal is busier in the summer. It’s also a popular weekend destination for Europeans, so if you want to find deals and less crowds, especially in the cities, try mid-week.

If you’re going during a peak time, which is generally the summer and weekends in the major towns and cities, or want to stay at a small hotel or AirB&B, consider reserving a room with free cancellation as soon as you know possible dates – at the least you’ll have a back-up. You should also make restaurant reservations for popular restaurants during peak times.

Fall and spring are the perfect time for outdoor activities and thus the best time to visit the Azores, Madeira and Douro Valley (especially during the harvest season). Lisbon and Porto work well year round. The average temperature in Lisbon is 75F in July and 52F in January.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Passport & Visa Requirements

No matter where you’re planning to visit in Portugal, if you’ll be in Portugal for under 90 days, a visa is not required for U.S. and most European citizens. From the U.S, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure and you must have two pages for each entry stamp. Additional information from the U.S. State Department about Portugal, including travel requirements, is located here.

Visa and passport requirements for other countries may be located here.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Paying for Stuff

Currency: Regardless of where you visit in Portugal, just know that it’s all on the Euro.

ATMs/Credit Cards: Our advice is always have a stash of cash on hand. Fancier and bigger establishments and those around touristy areas, usually take credit card but not always and often not American Express. ATMs in Portugal are fairly common but are less prevalent (and sometimes run out of cash) in more remote places like the smaller islands of the Azores.

Tipping: Like most European countries, tipping is 5-10% (10% when there’s heavier service involved) in restaurants.

Money saving tip: Drink Portuguese wine. Vinho Verde is especially tasty and you can often find a bottle on the menu for around 10-15 euros.

Best Places to Visit in Portugal: Food & Drinks

Locals eat all their meals later than in the U.S. Typically, hotel breakfasts don’t start until 8 or 8:30 and restaurants don’t open for lunch until 12pm (locals eat around 2pm) and dinner until 7pm (locals eat after 9pm). Bars don’t get busy in cities until after 12pm and they go late.

Meals are not a rushed affair, so if you’re in a hurry, let your server know. Restaurants do not ask if you’re ready for the check and will only bring it if you ask for it (say “A conta, por favor”).

Meals are a lot cheaper than in the U.S., especially if you drink Portuguese wine. Like in most European countries, you’ll also get served free snacks with your drinks (nuts, chips, etc.). But restaurants often charge for bread and will not serve tap water (even though it’s safe to drink), requiring you to buy bottled water.

At less fancy restaurants you’ll often see a list of fish, but they only have the fish that’s caught that day. If you like tuna very rare, I’d recommend showing a photo of how you want it cooked.

Take away coffee is hard to find, so do like the locals and sit (or stand!) and have an espresso.

You can also decide where to visit in Portugal based on food! Portuguese regions, even cities and towns, are known for specific food and drinks. These are noted in each Travel Honey itinerary, but we’ve listed some must tries anywhere you go!

Seafood is amazing wherever you go near the coast, but some local favorites include: octopus, bacalao (salted cod), codfish fritters (bolinhos de bacalhau or Pastéis de bacalhau) and limpets. Also try the fish of the day, which usually split in half and grilled.

Chouriço a flavorful pork sausage often served flaming!

Stews (cozidos) especially in the Azores where they cook them in the ground.

Whatever pastry is famous in the area (like Pastéis De Nata in Lisbon).

Portuguese wine a variety of wines are made in Portugal and they’re generally cheaper than imported wines. Try the Vinho Verde, which is the name of a region of Portugal where the wine grapes are grown.

Port is also commonly produced in Portugal, especially the Douro Valley.

A cold glass of Sagres and Super Bock, the local Portuguese beer.

Portugal: Using Your Data & Phone

Get a SIM card, it’s super easy and the service is good. Vodafone has a holiday SIM with 5GB of data, 500 min. Local calls/texts and 30 min. calls/texts to the U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand. There’s also a 1GB option for 10 euros that only includes local calls/texts. They both last for 30 days. Read Should I buy a Portugal SIM card for more information to make your decision.

Portugal: What to Read, Watch & Listen Before You Go

As you’re deciding where to visit in Portugal, brush up on books, movies and tunes from Portugal! Read selected prose of Fernando Pessoa, one of Portugal’s greatest writers. Watch “Blood of My Blood”. The movie tells the tale of a blue collar family living in suburban Lisbon. Highly acclaimed at several international film festivals. Listen to anything by Sam the Kid, star of Portugal’s rap scene.

Lisbon or Porto, the southern capital city or it’s smaller neighbor to the north? If you have time, there is no “tiebreaker,” because both should be visited. This post is about comparing and contrasting, and if you unfortunately have to choose between the two, which to choose. The good news is you really cannot go wrong with either Lisbon or Porto!

THE TIEBREAKER

Hi there, I’m Carolyn. I’m an American in my late 30s and I work in the medical field. I love adventures, traveling, being active, eating great food, and enjoying a killer cocktail or glass of wine. I’ve lived all over the US and was lucky enough to live in Ecuador and Chile in my 20s. I’ve traveled, hiked, and snowboarded all over South America, Europe, and of course, the US.

LISBON

Lisbon is to Porto as LA is to San Francisco, both geographically and culturally. Its quite funny actually, how similar the feel of Portugal is to parts of California. Even my travel buddy who grew up in northern CA agreed. The smells of the ocean and eucalyptus trees evoke a feeling of being stateside but the people, architecture, history, and culture are uniquely Portuguese and I felt like I was discovering something special at each turn throughout our journey.

Lisbon is a tiled labyrinth of streets, stairways and secret alleyways that lead you to magnificent churches, vistas, and restaurants. The tiled colors of the city are vibrant and play wonderfully with the river as their backdrop. The cobbled streets climb higher and higher until the entire city pops into view. It is sure to bring out the romantic in anyone. There is plenty of good food and bevies to help take in your surroundings. I highly suggest anything that comes from the ocean. Seafood is a must.

PROS: Very walk-able, friendly people, trendy, gorgeous beaches

CONS: Lots of hills, more expensive, touristy, affected

PORTO

Porto, the northern sister of Lisbon, is special in its own right. It has a more insular and cozy feel to it as the city is centered inward. There is a local pride to being a northerner and this love shines through in the local food and wine selections. Its streets, sidewalks and buildings are tile-clad as well, but the colors are more muted than its glitzier southern sister. It has a more traditional, academia vibe to it, but that’s not to say the nightlife is lacking.

PROS: less touristy, close to wine country (Douro Valley), cheaper, friendlier people with that small city vibe, authentic

CONS: smaller city, aesthetically less interesting, less tourism (less options across the board)

View of Porto

THE TIEBREAK

All in all, I loved both Lisbon and Porto and what they inherently brought to the table. I think both cities are a must, but if I HAD to choose it would have to be Lisbon. Its romantic streets and bright tiled buildings tugged at my heartstrings a bit more. Mostly because of similarities to another city far away (Valparaiso, Chile) that I hold dear to my heart. I do think Lisbon is a bit more vibrant than Porto and offers more options across the board. I still say, if it’s Lisbon or Porto, GO TO BOTH. And check out the Travel Honey itineraries for both Lisbon and Porto!

If you want to be in the heart of Lisbon near most bars and restaurants, stay in Barrio alto, Chiado or Baixa. If you want something quieter with good river views, try Alfama.
If you’re planning to use your cell phone in Portugal and are trying to decide whether to buy a Portugal SIM card, read this guide! INCLUDES NEW EU ROAMING RULES IMPLEMENTED JUNE 2017.

A SIM card is a small chip that allows your cell phone to tap into a specific mobile network. You can remove the SIM card provided by your U.S. wireless service carrier (Verizon, AT&T, etc.) and replace it with a SIM card from a Portuguese provider. Portuguese providers used to charge high roaming fees for using a Portugal SIM card in another country. Under the “roam like at home” rule implemented in June 2017, if you buy a SIM card in Portugal and travel to another EU country, you cannot be charged a roaming fee.

The local providers can, however, stop offering international roaming all together. So if you plan to travel outside of Portugal with the SIM card, make sure it will still work. Also, remember that the rule doesn’t apply to non-EU countries, like Iceland and Switzerland. If you still need the basics on what a SIM card even is, click here to learn more.

Factors to Consider When Deciding Whether to Buy a Portugal SIM Card

Can you unlock your cell phone?

Your phone must be unlocked to change your SIM card. Whether you can unlock depends on your U.S. cell phone provider. Read more to here to find out if your carrier will allow you to use a Portugal SIM card.

Are you OK not being able to call or text from your U.S. number?

When you replace your U.S. SIM card with a Portugal SIM card, you’ll get a Portuguese number, and you’ll be unable to call or text with your U.S. number. You can still call your voicemail to hear your audio messages, but you will not be alerted you have a voicemail. You will no longer receive text messages that are not sent over wifi. So if you have iPhone (and you’ve configured your settings correctly), you’ll be able to receive text messages from other iPhones, because those messages can be sent over wifi. You can also use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and other apps for wifi texts and calling (read an in-depth comparison on the best international calling app). But if someone needs to reach you by text on your U.S. number, or you need to be able to get calls even if you don’t have cellular or wifi service, then a Portugal SIM card is not for you.

How much data do you use a day?

You should get a rough idea about how much data you use in your day-to-day life when you’re not traveling and how that may change when you visit Portugal. Most nicer hotels in Portugal have free wifi, but it’s often slow. Some restaurants have it, but free wifi is not super widespread, especially when you leave the more populated cities. If you plan to use step-by-step directions on your phone in Portugal (read more on whether to get GPS or rely on offline maps ) more often than you usually do at home or plan to post more on social media, you should expect to use more data. For how to find out how much data you normally use and how much data you’ll use on your trip to Portugal (and tips for reducing data!), read more here.

How many days will you be traveling?

If you’re only going to Portugal for a few days, it may make more sense to use your U.S. provider if you have Verizon or AT&T. Some of the SIM cards expire after a certain number of days, so you want to make sure you can use your Portugal SIM card for your whole trip.

What are my Options Besides Portugal SIM Cards?

Just rely on Wifi.

When heading to Portugal, you can always just keep your U.S. wireless carrier but turn your phone to airplane mode and rely on wifi and international calling apps to call home. But many of us want to in real time: get directions, text home and obviously let the world know about our cool trip on social media. For those who are more willing to unplug, know that if you need to use your phone in a pinch, a two-minute call will run you $40 on AT&T and $35.80 on Verizon if you don’t change to an international plan ahead of time. Also, before landing in Portugal, make sure you turn cellular data and roaming off or put your phone to airplane mode so you are not charged roaming fees.

Use the international plan from your U.S. provider.

If there’s no wifi, your smartphone uses cellular data to connect to the internet. If you don’t use an online service like Skype or WhatsApp, your smartphone uses a voice network to call home. If you keep your U.S. wireless plan without changing to an international plan, you may be exhorbitant roaming fees. U.S. wireless carriers, however, have begun offering more competitive international plans and some even provide free international roaming. It’s more convenient to just keep your existing plan, because you don’t have to change to a Portuguese number. So start by reviewing the international plan offered by your existing U.S. wireless carrier. In short, Sprint, T-Mobile and Project Fi offer some type of free international service and AT&T and Verizon offer a $10/day option.

When Should you NOT Buy a Portugal SIM Card?

If you have T-Mobile, Project Fi or Sprint, stick with your carrier and pay the extra fee if you can to get faster speeds.

If you have Verizon or AT&T, use their international $10/day plan if money isn’t an object or you’re only going for a couple days.

If you really don’t plan to use the internet outside a hotel or restaurant, stick to wifi.

If you can’t unlock your cell phone or if someone needs to reach you on your U.S. number (i.e., they can’t call you on a wifi calling app like WhatsApp or Skype).

Portugal SIM Card Options

Portugal’ s top two major operators are Vodafone and MEO. 4G coverage in Portugal is good under both providers but check here if you’re going to more unpopulated areas. We’ve listed the SIM cards offered by by both Vodafone and MEO. But if you’re only visiting for vacation, the holiday SIM card is usually the best option unless you plan to use very little data or visit for a short time.

Vodafone

Vodafone has a 30-day holiday SIM with 5GB of data, 500 min. local calls/texts and 30 min. calls/texts to the U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand for 20 Euros. There’s also no roaming if you then use the SIM card in other EU countries. There’s also a 1GB option for 10 Euros that only includes local calls/texts. Vodafone also has non-holiday SIM card options, but they are more expensive and only make sense if you’re staying in Portugal more than 30 days.

Vodafone also has more stores in Portugal and is the only provider with stores in all the major Portugal airports. If you’ll need to contact your accommodation or you want to take Uber from the airport, it’s helpful to get your SIM card at the airport. Also, having more store locations is helpful when initially finding a store to buy a SIM card, if you need to buy more credit, or if there’s an issue with the SIM card.

MEO

An MEO Portugal SIM card is 10 Euros then you have to add data and minutes. You can buy a week-long combo voice and data package called TOP. The options are 200MB (2.80 Euros), 1GB (3.30 Euros) or 3GB (4 Euros), which includes 500 min calling or texts. There’s no option to top-off after the week. MEO also offers a 15-day holiday plan for 15 Euros, which includes 60 minutes and 500 SMS national and international calls to the EU, USA, Canada, Angola, Brazil and Israel and 2 GB of data. You can top-off, but you have you have to pay another 15 Euros.

What type of Portugal SIM Card to Buy?

If you decide a Portugal SIM card is the way to go, this is our advice on which SIM card provider to choose and what type of SIM card to get.

When do you need cellular service? If you need cellular service as soon as you land, and you land when the Vodafone store is open, then choose Vodafone, because you’ll be able to get your SIM card at the airport. Choose either the 10 or 20 Euro holiday SIM card, depending on how much data you plan to use.

How long will you been Portugal and how much data will you use? If you don’t need to buy your SIM card at the airport, and you’re visiting Portugal for 1-2 weeks and will use 1-2 GB of data, consider getting the MEO Tourist SIM card, which will save you 5 Euros off the Vodafone Holiday SIM card price. If you’re only for a week but but plan to use lots of data, consider getting the MEO Combo plan with 3GB of data, which again, should save you about 5 Euros off the Vodafone Holiday SIM card.

Consider coverage. Coverage on MEO and Vodafone is generally good in the bigger cities of Portugal, like Lisbon, Porto and Faros, but if you plan to travel more remotely, check coverage here where you’re specifically going.

Consider getting a data only SIM card. If you’re not traveling alone, you could buy one SIM card with more data (data only cards are usually cheaper), and use the phone as a mobile hotspot for the other travelers. A hotspot is a wireless access point, so your phone becomes the wifi provider to whoever you give access. We also suggest that at least one person in the party gets a package that includes minutes on a voice network. Although you can use Skype credits to call a local number to call a cab or make a dinner reservation, service may be different for cellular data and network voice calls/texts, so having both ensures that you’ll have access to the best service and that someone from home can always reach you in an emergency.

Where to Buy a Portugal SIM Card?

Unless your familiar with how to change out your SIM card and set up your account, it’s best to buy your Portugal SIM card at the store of the actual provider. They will replace the SIM card, set up your account, make sure it actually works, and answer any questions. If you decide not to buy your Portugal SIM card in the provider’s store, you can purchase one in most grocery or tobacco type stores.

In the Airport

If the store is open, we suggest buying the SIM card at the airport, so you’ll be able use directions and make calls before you get to your accommodation. We’ve listed the hours for the major Portugal airports below.

Lisbon – 8am to 10pm every day

Porto – 7:30am to 9pm every day

Faro – Sept-May 8am every day; Jun-Aug 9am-7pm every day

Sao Miguel – 8am to 1pm; 2-7pm every day

When you arrive to your destination

If the Vodafone store is closed, you can also visit one of the many Vodafone or MEO stores in Portugal. Just remember to mark on your map the location of your destination before leaving the airport (the major Portugal airports provide free wifi). Even if you don’t have cellular service, your GPS will still work (i.e., you’ll still see your location with the blue dot and can use it to find your hotel). You can also download the map offline and use offline directions (more on that here). Travel Honey includes Vodafone locations in the Travel Map provided with each itinerary, so they should be easy to find!

These are Ryan’s tips for 3 nights in Lagos in the Algarve. Get great tips on where to eat, go out and where to stay!

Where do you live when you’re not traveling? Boston

Who went on the trip? We’re a couple in our 30s.

What was the Trip? 3 nights in the Lagos in the Algarve in July 2017.

What were your interests/goals on the trip? We went the Algarve as part of a week long trip to Lisbon and Porto. Our goal in the Algarve was to relax after being on the go in Lisbon and Porto.

Anything especially awesome?
We drove from Lisbon, which was about a 3 hour drive. Praia de Cavaleiro was an awesome beach on the drive down, there were only two other people when we went. It’s in the middle of nowhere and there are lots of stairs to get down to the beach

We did a private boat charter that was fun. They took us to the caves, saw dolphins, swam, etc. It was way better than just doing one of the small motorized boats with 10-15 people on it for an hour to see 3-4 caves, but obviously more expensive.

Great Fish n Chips/Fish Tacos place called Ol Bastards.

In Lagos, there are lots of dive/college type bars that stay open late (think 4am). Shakers was my favorite.

Had a great lunch of Piri Piri chicken at Restaurante Piri-Piri in Lagos. Only $25 euros with wine for two people.

We stayed at Cascade Wellness Hotel in a great 1 bedroom unit. It was a very nice property. There were much cheaper options in town, but we wanted the poolside service.

Average cost per night of one hotel room? About $325

Wish I could have gone to the Peneda Gueres National Park. Heard it was quite a hiking experience for the outdoors enthusiasts.

These are Amy’s tips from her trip to Portugal. Amy spent 2 nights in Lisbon and 6 nights on Sao Miguel island in the Azores. Amy visited Portugal to experience the culture, see the sights, go hiking, eat all the food and drink all the wine.

Any hotels, restaurants or activities especially awesome?

Lisbon. I loved the castle that overlooks the city, São Jorge Castle. We went there at sunset which was so lovely. I only wish we had gone an hour or so earlier to have more time to walk around/see the museum. And we should have brought our own wine!

Azores. Dinner at Quinta dos Sabores restaurant was my fave. And I loved the nature hike with Rimi from Minuvida hotel. It was so cool to learn about the flora/fauna of the area and have the cozito dinner. Wish we got to do the longer hike with them!

Dislikes/things you would have done differently?

I loved Lisbon overall and would love to spend more time there. Will def be going back soon!

Azores…I liked our canyoning activity but I feel like its not for everyone. It was very cool to jump into the waterfalls but Captain Clumsy over here didn’t enjoy climbing over the slippery rocks in a wetsuit. Still glad I did it though!

If you had one more day? One less day?

One more day in Lisbon: rent a car and drive out of the city to see the coast/castles.

One more day in Azores: hang gliding and/or a longer hike! One less day-would have skipped the hot springs. I liked our hike over there that we did in the morning-was cool to see all the cozitos cooking, but the color and muddiness of the hot springs water at the ones by our hotel was a little off putting. Also, would have skipped getting food poisoning

These are Krista’s tips from her 6 day trip to Porto, Douro Valley and the Algarve in Portugal. Krista went with her other half to experience the culture in Porto and Douro Valley and to relax on the beach in the Algarve. The average price of the hotels was 225 euros and the average entree at the restaurants was 20 euros.

Any hotels, restaurants or activities especially awesome?

The Yeatman Hotel in Porto was our favorite hotel and also an amazing spot for sunset view drinks. The price for cheese and wine was worth the view!

Dislikes/things you would have done differently?

I would have made dinner reservations in advance – as most of the popular restaurants were booked up.

If you had one more day? One less day?

If I had one more day, I would spend it exploring more vineyards in the Douro Valley. There is so much to see and explore there!

You’d like to go on a European city break to experience vibrant culture, eat amazing food and run around the beach. Barcelona and Lisbon are obvious choices; read on to see which city is a better fit for you in this Travel Honey Tiebreaker.

THE CONTENDERS

On one hand, there is Barcelona. It’s the second most populous city in Spain and sits on the Mediterranean Sea coast. Barcelona gets plenty of sunshine and is a jumping off point for the Balearic Islands – Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca which are accessible via a short flight or ferry ride. On the other hand, there is Lisbon which is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Lisbon predates Paris and London and is located about an hour’s drive from the unspoilt beaches of Comporta.

THE TIEBREAKER

Hi, I’m Lids. I’m a U.S. ex-pat in my early thirties. I have lived in London for four years and work in the creative industry. During this time, I have visited both cities on weekends and explored the surrounding beaches in each place. Outside of traveling, I spend my free time skiing, sailing, eating amazing food and painting.

THE PROS AND CONS

Both cities are fabulous places to visit, but here is what makes them different:

If you want to get rowdy at night, head to Barcelona. There are a ton of bars and clubs lining the beach promenade. Start with sundowner drinks at the W hotel, then head to Agua or the Icebar. If you prefer more mellow nights, head to Lisbon where you can watch the sunset from a rooftop bar, such the Park Bar on Calçada do Combro, and take your time finishing a great bottle of wine.

If you’re into organic architecture, head to Barcelona to view Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia basilica and Casa Batlló. But, if towers and fortresses are more your style, head to Lisbon where you can admire the São Jorge castle in the city center or drive an hour to take in mountain top views from the Sintra Palace.

If you’re a foodie who loves fresh fresh and ceviche, Lisbon is your city. There are plenty of cevicherias in the center but my favorite is A Cevicheria on Rua Dom Pedro. However, if you’re a foodie who gets excited about a plate of expertly carved iberico ham, crispy cheese croquettes and seafood paella, then Barcelona’s heartier fare is for you.

And the beaches? Barcelona’s beaches are right in the city center and filled with stylish urbanites whereas Lisbon’s beaches are further out and require a small commute – that said, these beaches are worth the effort – quiet, uncrowded and sublime. Note that Barcelona is located further south than Lisbon and the Mediterranean waters are warmer than the Atlantic. Thus, if its shoulder seasons and you’d like to avoid a polar bear swim, head to Barcelona.

The currency in both Spain and Portugal’s is the euro. That said, a euro stretches further in Portugal that is does in Spain, so Lisbon is a good choice for a more budget conscious traveller.

THE TIEBREAK

Lisbon and Barcelona are both great. See both, but if you can’t, head to vibrant Barcelona for active days and full on nightlife and Lisbon for all the sights but minus the drama, where you can chill and take it easy on your wallet.
