What’s the trip? Portugal must sees!

This itinerary and map is perfect for anyone’s first trip to Portugal. The itinerary guides travelers through Portugal must sees, best eats and top activities in Lisbon and Sintra, ideal for anyone’s first trip to Portugal.

ITINERARY PREVIEW

Portugal Must Sees – Day 1

We assume you’ll arrive in the morning. Get yourself checked in, grab lunch and spend the afternoon in Belem visiting Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower/Torre Belem and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. You’ll have time for a siesta before dinner (or take a nap before if you arrive on a redeye).

Portugal Must Sees – Day 2

Spend the day walking around the heart of Lisbon. The earlier you get started, the more you’ll see. Be prepared for hills and tired legs!

Portugal Must Sees – Day 3

Explore the Alfama neighborhood. The Alfama neighborhood is a lot quieter than Barria Alto but it’s full of historical sites and a great place to unwind. This day isn’t as packed, so enjoy the gorgeous views at the Alfama and the deck/pool if it’s nice weather.

Portugal Must Sees – Day 4

Head to the spectacular castles, palaces and mansions in Sintra. There’s a train into town, or we picked up our rental car in the morning and after stop in Cascais headed to Sintra, a unique village full of palaces and castles. We left the rental car place at about 10:15am, and we wished we’d left a little earlier to give us more time in Sintra.

What’s the trip? 3 Days in Algarve, Portugal

This is a 3 day, 2 night trip in Armação de Pêra in the Algarve. It’s for the outdoorsy traveler who has a love for adventures – and an equal appreciation for luxury and relaxation. By spending three offseason days in the Algarve, we had the beaches, caves and the five-star Vilalara Thalassa Resort almost entirely to ourselves. I visited with my boyfriend, and spent three days exploring the waterfront, touring sea caves, relaxing at the hotel and eating all the seafood we could get our hands on.

Here’s a preview of each day of the 3 Days in Algarve, Portugal

3 Days in Algarve, Portugal – Day 1

We flew in to Lisbon on an overnight flight and drove to the Armação de Pêra region of the Algarve and explored and relaxed in the afternoon. Day 1 Transport: We picked up our rental car at the airport and drove and took the A2 highway to the Algarve, which took about 3 hours. We arrived at 1pm and explored by foot in the afternoon.

3 Days in Algarve, Portugal – Day 2

We slept in to recover from our jet lag, then grabbed breakfast on the road to make it to the Benagil Sea Cave tour at 12pm. We enjoyed lunch after at the beach, then hiked along the sea cliffs and finished an action-packed day by refueling with room-service dessert on our beautiful hotel patio. Day 2 Transport: We drove 15 minutes to the tour starting point, took a boat for the tour then hiked along the cliffs and drove back to the hotel.

3 Days in Algarve, Portugal – Day 3

Explore the Sagres lighthouse and cliffs. Day 3 Transport: Sagres is an hour drive from the Vilalara Thalassa Resort.

This itinerary is for an 8 day adventure to Lisbon and up the north coast to Sintra, Porto and the Douro Valley. Katy, our savvy traveler, went on this adventure with a friend. They hit all the sights sought out the local hotspots for food and drinks. They spent 3 nights in Lisbon, 1 night in Sintra, 2 nights in Douro Valley, and 2 nights in Porto. Although They ate at top restaurants and above average lodging, the trip was affordable because Portugal is cheap! This itinerary is very much on-the-go, but if you want a slower-paced trip, just pick the activities that most appeal to you.

Why Visit Lisbon and Porto?

Katy chose Lisbon, because it’s a must if visiting Portugal for the first time. Then she chose to head north to Porto instead of south to the Algarve, because of her love of wine made the Douro Valley a must.

Here’s a preview of what this 8 Days in Portugal Itinerary from Katy:

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 1

We arrived mid-morning and spent the afternoon in Belem. So long as you arrive by lunchtime and it’s not a Monday, I suggest starting with the TimeOut Market for lunch then spend the afternoon in Belem visiting Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower/Torre Belem and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. You’ll have time for a siesta before dinner (or take a nap before if you arrive on a redeye).

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 2

Spend the day walking around the heart of Lisbon. The earlier you get started, the more you’ll see. Be prepared for hills and tired legs!

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 3

Explore the Alfama neighborhood. The Alfama neighborhood is a lot quieter than Barria Alto but it’s full of historical sites and a great place to unwind. This day wasn’t as packed, so enjoy the gorgeous views at the Alfama and the deck/pool if it’s nice weather.

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 4

Head to Cascais then north to spectacular Sintra. We picked up our rental car in the morning and after stop in Cascais headed to Sintra, a unique village full of palaces and castles. We left the rental car place at about 10:15am, and we wished we’d left a little earlier to give us more time in Sintra. I’d recommend trying to leave by 9am.

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 5

Drive north to the Douro Valley stopping in Obidos and Nazare.

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 6

Have a lazy morning or try a walk, bike ride or boat ride. Next is lunch, wine tastings and an early dinner at DOC. During the busy season, or if you want to go at specific times or book a tour, you will need to call ahead to book the wineries. Try to get to Quinta do Tedo right before it closes at 7pm to see the sunset. That will get you to DOC at 7:30pm when it opens. After an afternoon of wine tasting, we were ready for an early dinner.

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 7

Breakfast in the Douro Valley then drive about hour to Porto to explore.

8 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 8

Wander Porto and do a port tasting on your last day. In the morning, wander the streets. We’ve listed some of our favorite highlights to stop at on your way. In the afternoon, head over to Ribeira de Gaia (across the river from Porto) for a tour of one the Port houses. You can either try to do the last tour and stay over for dinner or you could do an earlier tour and come back for a little siesta then head back out for a later dinner. The second option is best if you want to try and see Porto’s nightlife, which starts late.

This itinerary is for seven days in Porto, Lisbon and Evora and has a focus on culture and is for those who want to experience authentic Portugal. Sandra, the Travel Honey Contributor, went on a solo adventure for 2 days in Porto and 3 days in Evora. Sandra lives in Lisbon, so the 3 day itinerary for Lisbon are her favorite things to do there. Accommodation is in small, boutique hotels and the focus is on slow travel.

Why Visit Evora, Lisbon and Porto?

Lisbon has been Sandra’s adoptive hometown for the last 20 years, so she adores to show her off.

Learn More About This 7 Days in Portugal Itinerary and Map – Click button above to download detailed itinerary & map!

This itinerary is a 7 day adventurous beach bum’s dream trip to Portugal with the most spectacular scenery and a dash of city life. Nina, the Travel Honey Contributor, spent a month in the Algarve with her boyfriend and visited Lisbon at the end. This is her ultimate 4 days on the Algarve coast and 3 days in Lisbon. The days on this trip are chill and involve a lot of exploring on your own. There are plenty of active, outdoor activities in the Algarve and walking in Lisbon. Prices are gentle and accommodation is based at cozy Airbnbs.

Why Visit Lisbon & the Algarve?

Nina chose Portugal after she asked by blog readers for where to go in Europe in March/April that was warm as possible, near beaches, and not be too pricey. She decided on the Algarve because it was the most southern/warmest. She booked a flight to Faro, the cheapest airport to fly into and based herself out of Sagres (she couldn’t have been any more south!). It was the perfect place to chill, get work done, and take mini road trips to the stunning sites that surrounded Sagres. She also popped over to Lisbon to check out the famous (and my new favorite) European capital because, how could she not?

Here’s a preview of what this 7 Days in Portugal Itinerary from Nina:

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 1

Fly into Faro, Portugal and drive to your base, Sagres on the Algarve coast. Gaze upon quite possibly the most amazing beaches and rock formations and if you can pull yourself away from climbing the crazy cliffsides and rocks, wander through Lagos. Day 1 Transport: Fly into Faro, Portugal and pick up your rental car, drive about an hour and 15 minutes to Sagres. The drive to Ponta da Piedade from Sagres was about 35 mintutes. Once in back in Sagres, you can walk to dinner.

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 2

Exploring one of the most famous caves in the country and maybe even chill on the beach inside! Take a boat or kayak tour, explore more cliffsides, and beach bum on one of the best beaches in the country. Day 2 Transport: Benagil Cave is about an hour drive from Sagres and lunch is about 8 minutes from the cave on your way back to Sagres.

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 3

Hiking inland and around the highest point in the Algarve, some beach bumming and more trails along the coast, and then a dash of shopping if you’re up for it. Day 3 Transport: Benagil Cave is about an hour drive from Sagres and lunch is about 8 minutes from the cave on your way back to Sagres.

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 4

Today is a beach day. Sagres is the chilled out town that surfers dream of and my favorite town in Portugal. There are a number of beaches to choose from and various activities, which I’ve describe below. Day 4 Transport: Depends on which beach you go to, you can either walk or drive.

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 5

Arrive in Lisbon and get lost wandering in Lisbon’s Barrio Alto neighborhood. Day 5 Transport: Fly from Faro to Lisbon, take an Uber to Lisbon center and walk from there!

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 6

Exploring the neighborhood just beyond Bairro Alto, Alfama. More viewpoints and gorgeous architecture! Day 6 Transport: We walked to everything, and highly suggest doing the same, but you can take a tram or Uber if your legs get tired.

7 Days in Portugal Itinerary – Day 7

Play prince/princess and explore castles all day! Day 7 Transport: We took an Uber to and from Sintra, which is about 30 minutes without traffic. You can always take a train or rent a car for the day
